I think this is the first Cambodian movie I’ve posted, but all of Rithy Panh’s filmography deserves mentioning. His family was killed by the Khmer Rouge and out of that history he forged a career as the most important filmmaker in Cambodia, and one of the greatest documentarians of all time. His films fuse memory and history, with surreal visual flights - this film is like a mosaic. The subjects are harsh, often drawing from authoritative memories of war and violence. He dedicated himself to documenting the history of that country in a way that is personal and unique, but the tone is meditating. The music is beautiful.
