18 May 2011 | Queen Elizabeth II greets Iris Robinson, the wife of Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson, with Irish President Mary McAleese at the State Banquet in Dublin Castle in Dublin, Ireland. The Duke and Queen's visit to Ireland is the first by a British monarch since 1911. An unprecedented security operation is taking place with much of the centre of Dublin turning into a car-free zone. Republican dissident groups have made it clear they are intent on disrupting proceedings. (c) Arthur Edwards - Pool/Getty Images
'Abomination: The DUP in Concert' will see some of the most controversial views of party members sung verbatim
A new opera featuring the anti-gay comments of senior DUP politicians will premiere in Belfast later this month. The lyrics for Abomination: The DUP in Concert are composed entirely of verbatim views expressed by controversial senior party figures like Iris Robinson and Ian Paisley Jr. The piece will largely focus on an infamous 2008 interview given by Robinson, a former MP and the wife of former party leader Peter Robinson, in which she described homosexuality as “an abomination.” The incident occurred after a gay man in Northern Ireland was physically assaulted because of his sexuality.
Learning about the DUP is a fucking wild ride.

Two of my earliest pieces which I did as a law student for student publication The Verdict. Done in autumn 2010 or so.
The peculiarities of politics in Northern Ireland have meant that its politicians have not been held to normal standards of democratic accountability.

Northern Ireland is the last place in western Europe in which party allegiances are still largely determined by identity-based politics founded in rival interpretations of the Bible. The most ostentatiously and aggressively religiose of the parties is the DUP, in many ways the political wing of the Free Presbyterian church of Ulster. Mrs Robinson was infamous for tirades against the "abomination" of gay sex, posturing which is now shown to be not only bigoted but also richly hypocritical. Verily, God is not mocked. He reserves an especially potent lightning bolt for the bullies of the pulpit who most self-righteously claim to be the Almighty's representative on Earth. That is a useful lesson from the parable of the first minister's wife. It is one that may help to nudge the politics of Northern Ireland in a more secular direction.
