I watched the last two episodes of The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco, and as usual have thoughts, which also as usual are full of spoilers and thus beneath the cut.
The music was really lovely in this story! It got me the second time because theyād already pulled theĀ āhave something terrible happen in another room during the lovely musicā act earlier in the episode, but then the second time turned out to also (partially) be that too. However they have used lovely music other times in this show without bad things happening concurrently. And itās still the worst offender on the terrible-things-to-music front (*cough* Downton Abbey *cough* - I still havenāt forgiven Downton Abbey for that particular plot line they started that way, but I digress).
We all agree that love song that was being sung in the club was really about Millie and Jean, yes? Yes? Good. :D
I appreciate that the show does not insist on people looking really put together all the time, even in situations where it doesnāt make sense. For example when they pull the bag off of Jeanās head, and her hair is all mussed up because I think they really did just pull the bag off the actressā head. Not just a cursory - oh it should be mussed so weāll muss it a little bit. I canāt remember other examples right now but I know theyāve done it.
For all that Hailey has all that affection for Iris youād think she might listen to her a bit more than she does, but I suppose she wouldnāt be Hailey if she did. For goodness sakes, if Hailey was going to insist on rebuilding the machine she could have at least waited until the Soviets were gone.
Hailey taking off and tackling the cellist was such classic Hailey. That girl does not go in for subtlety or planning steps ahead.
Haileyās confession to Jean! That was so sweet and a little heartbreaking - to love without hope or expectation of return, and to know that the object of your affect is not going to return your feelings. (Hailey does have excellent taste though!) Jean was splendid about it, I thought. And that was such a nice (and true!) speech she made to Hailey just before it, about Haileyās excellent qualities. [I know Iāve said this before, but theĀ number of queer things that have become explicitly canon in this show is delightful.]
I thought that Millie was going to kiss Jean right there in front of everyone at the end, and alas she did not, but perhaps she didnāt want to out them in front of Bill, who has clearly not figured them out yet.
Speaking of kisses, I have questions about what happened between Millie and Bill. What on earth was that? Technically it was kissing but the start of it looked very weird.Ā This looked like they were launching their mouths at each other? Is that a thing people do? They kind of threw themselves at each other but in this weird way that didnāt look romantic at all. I think part of it was their mouths were open really wide and Millie was also launching herself up at him. Was it a weird distraction? A little bit of attraction combined with a desire to put him off? I know she could have put him off at the door without it. Were we supposed to see this as them just being overcome with passion for each other? It didnāt really look like that to me. It looked extremely awkward, as a matter of fact. Is that just me?
Did Jean spend the night at Irisā house the night before the FBI showed up to take Iris away? Anyway I highly approve of Aunt Jean helping the kids get to school/babysitting.
Iris was amazing - the way she stood her ground with the really alarming FBI guys, and went up against the wife of the ex-ambassador. Them squaring off at Crissy Field in particular. (I wish I had half the courage of the ladies on this show.) I also liked the part where she was practicing things to say when they were going to bust in on the guys holding Jean captive. Very different circumstances of course, but nervously revising/practicing what you might say in a situation is something I am very familiar with.Ā
Jeanās hair! Having her hair down in a clip! That was great, as were the multiple shots of Millie looking at it and admiring it. Also her calling Jean darling twice in the course of having come home (even though Jean was not there (*sob*) made my little shippy heart sing.Ā
Iām looking forward to being able to read fic without fear of spoilers, and I definitely want to write fic, though Iām not sure if Iām ready to start writing just yet - the characters still feel like theyāre settling in my brain.
