Inside Karen & Jimmyâs âTumultuous Love Affairâ
Dev is so last season! When Smash returns for its second season Feb. 5 on NBC, Karen (Katharine McPhee) will find herself very much involved with up-and-coming composer Jimmy (Jeremy Jordan) â but donât call it a âlove storyâ just yet. âItâs more of a chemistry story,â Jeremy explained to HollywoodLife.com during a recent visit to the showâs NYC set. âItâs this constant tug and pull; just when you think something might happen with them, something gets in the way.â
Katharine, meanwhile, chooses to look at Karen and Jimmyâs relationship in a much more romantic light, describing it as a âtumultuous love affair.â
Jimmyâs a tough nut to crack, and it sounds like Karen is just the squirrel heâs been looking for. (Does that make sense? Squirrels crack nuts, right?)
âHe doesnât trust anyone â except maybe his best friend Kyle, played by Andy Mientus â until Karen comes in,â Jeremy said. âShe sort of starts to open him up a little bit, but itâs very hard work on her part.â
And Karen doesnât exactly mind putting in the extra effort.
âI think she she â as many theater girls are â is a sucker for men that are incredibly talented,â Katharine admitted.
Whatâs The Deal With Jimmy?
After chatting with Jeremy about his bad-boy character, I think itâs safe to say that Karen has no idea what sheâs getting herself into.
âHeâs a very angry young man,â Jeremy said. âHeâs had a lot of really bad things happen to him in his life. ⌠Itâs difficult for him to trust anybody with his [music], so youâll see a lot of contention between him and the characters. Heâs a tough one to like, but hopefully youâll see glimpses of why he is that way and how good he can be.â
And even though drugs play into Jimmyâs story line a bit, Jeremy âwouldnât say heâs a drug addict.â
âItâs sort what gets him through tough times ⌠his denial,â Jeremy explained. âWhenever he doesnât understand how to deal with something, or doesnât want to face it, thatâs where he goes.â
