Digital Rights Advocacy The Internet was shut down in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon on January 17, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. and this lasted for a total of 240 days (according to ACCESS NOW and Internet Sans Frontieres). The frustrations and losses experienced by all sectors of the economy during the internet outage were palpable. The violation of the fundamental human right to Internet access compelled many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to take action to protect the population and advocate for digital rights in the country. To strengthen Digital Rights advocacy, AFROLEADERSHIP, a Non-Governmental Organization, in collaboration with INTERNEWS, organized a two-day intensive training program on the 28th and 29th of May 2021 at the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, Yaounde, under the theme, “Building Evidence for Internet Right Advocacy,” to equip the participants, the majority of whom were from the North West and South West Regions, with knowledge and skills needed for Digital right Advocacy. The 2-day intensive training brought in experts such as Vianny Forewah, a certified information security auditor and Internet censorship researcher, who instructed participants on Network Measurement, Network Measurement Tools (such as OONI Probe and M-LAB), and Network Measurements in Advocacy and Policy Against Internet Shutdowns. Ngwayi Joel, CEO of Tec-lap, concluded the two-day training with an in-depth exposé on Digital Security; strategies for digital security such as the use of passwords, avoiding suspicious links, backing up, and remote wiping, among others. After documenting well-defined strategies before, during, and after an internet outage, the highly engaged participants returned to their respective regions with greater consciousness on digital rights. They equally set the goal of further investigating the contracts binding private Internet Service Providers and the government to ensure that consumers' Internet Access rights are well protected. - Ayuba Garba, Open Dreams #DigitalRights #KeepItOn #internetaccess #internetrights #responsibility #accountability Access Now Internet Sans Frontières https://www.instagram.com/p/CPiKQhxt4XJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

BREAKING: Big win for Internet rights in India! The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India just announced a ban on discriminatory tariffs for data services -- meaning that the values of an open and equal Internet we've fought for in the U.S. will be upheld in India. This is a crucial decision that protects information access and tech innovation in India, and a blow for Facebook’s Free Basics program, which has been condemned as a form of “economic racism.”
In advance of the TRAI's decision, 18MR Media Justice Campaigner Mark Tseng Putterman and technologist and activist Anirvan Chatterjee penned this piece in The Aerogram on why we're invested in the fight for an open Internet in our homelands.

In today’s digital world, our ability to communicate depends on an Internet connection. Millions of...
So often directly impacted individuals are left out of conversations about policies that impact them most. That's why we're so excited about Media Action Grassroots Network's storybank project, which amplifies the voices of folks without home broadband internet access to be heard in policy discussions about Lifeline modernization that could increase subsidized internet access!
If you have a story to share, you can still submit at the following link, or by phone/text at (213) 973-3760! Let's make sure our AAPI perspectives are included in the conversation.
