“I… I don’t really know. It’s supposed to be ten times easier to get powers if you’re second generation. But we don’t have research on third generations yet. It’s only pretty recently that we had the first third-generation cape on record. The baby in Toronto.”
I've heard some people really didn't like that Ward reveals that Vicky's second generation trigger wasn't just from a basketball foul. I think I mentioned it back then when it came up in Arc 4. How it basically reveals that the second gen being easier thing isn't actually true, per se.
And I do kind of like the idea that second gen capes trigger easier, because it kind of makes sense with the purpose of shards, right?
But I would say that this might be one of those times, loathe as I am to admit it, where the fandom kind of missed the point in Worm itself.
Because one, the reveal in Arc 4 is hardly from an unbiased source, and Regent is himself a 2nd Gen, so he knows it's not quite so simple as '2nd gen capes trigger easier' (though he may be so psychologically burnt out he doesn't think his trigger was that bad? I don't remember what his trigger was anymore), and,
Two, well, you have this.
Theo is third Gen one one side, 2nd gen on the other, has been surrounded by capes most of his life, and hasn't had that 'easy' trigger.
Not a ton of data points, but the Worm fandom has done more with less.
I hate to say it, but... I think the Ward Haters had it wrong this time.
(Besides, I really like the expanded details of Vicky's trigger, one of the revelations from Ward I actually like)
