i also think that part of it is where abusers know that trotting out an abuse backstory, real or not, will gain them sympathy or allow them to avoid the work of building empathy, and these narratives don't challenge that tactic but reinforce it. what an awful message for survivors/victims to internalize from media: monstrous things done to you make you fated to be a monster too, instead of the message that monstrous acts are a choice, just as unlearning them can be too

So what I ended up realized at some point after posting this was that - while Clint has to be careful which anachronistic songs he sings at the club (he’s a little shit so yes he sings songs he probably shouldn’t, but with the idea that if they came out in the 2000s he’s probably okay because no one from 1938/39 will remember him) he doesn’t really have to be as careful when he’s with Bucky in his apartment (because he ‘knows’ Bucky ‘dies’ in 1945). I settled on Moon River and I think i can maybe get away with not naming the other two just by the way I structure things.

This then led the realization that if ever I become popular enough that people ask about timestamps or things from my fics I could do something with the Winter Solider glitching during a mission from hearing the random songs Clint would sing around his apartment.
