âIf you must know, she is the one soul destined for my own, and we are going to be together forever,â he declared loftily. âThatâs weird,â Luke told him. âWeâre thirteen.âÂ

In Other Lands / The Turn of the Story by Sarah Rees Brennan (requested by @hopelesswillwin)
Elliot was trying to teach himself trollish via a two-hundred-year-old book by a man whoâd had a traumatic break-up with a troll. This meant a lot of commentary along the lines of âThis is how trolls say I love you. FOOTNOTE: BUT THEY DONâT MEAN IT!âÂ

Sometimes itâs not the kid you expect who falls through to magicland, sometimes itâs . . . Elliott. Heâs grumpy, nerdy, and appalled by both the dearth of technology and the levels of fitness involved in swinging swords around. Heâs a little enchanted by the elves and mermaids. Despite his aversion to war, work, and most people (human or otherwise) he finds that two unlikely ideas, friendship and world peace, may actually be possible.

He had been taken away from geography class, one of his most interesting classes, to take some kind of scholarship test out in the wild. A woman in odd clothing had âtestedâ him by asking him if he could see a wall standing in the middle of a field. When he told her âObviously, because itâs a wall. Walls tend to be obviousâ she had pointed out other people blithely walking through the wall as if it was not there, and told him that he was one of the chosen few with the sight.

âI donât have a special table,â Elliot protested.
âUh, you, the murderous, man-hating elf girl, and the intense gay kid?â asked the medic. âYouâre the weirdo table.â
âWhy is language in the Borderlands so weird? Some of itâs modern, and some of itâs medieval, and I guess that makes sense with the influx of a certain amount of new blood to the training camp every year, but how do some words and phrases transfer, while others donât? Why do you know the word âjerkâ and not the word âbisexualâ?â âI guess people say the first word more,â said Luke.

Elliot was left to trail behind. As he did, he thought about Luke talking about literary tropesâthe fearless hero, the valiant heroine, and where did it all leave him? Sidekick: a horrible indignity, Elliot refused to accept it. And the other idea was some sort of lurking, jealous figure: an Iago, a pathetic pseudo-villain waiting in the wings to plot and bring the hero down. He wasnât going to plot against Luke, who had dumb daffodil hair and said âtropezâ, for Godâs sake.
