Sooo much angst in that picture 

The explosion of violet and black knocked the warlock back, slamming him into a shelf and leaving him slumped against the ground. He curled in on himself pain, closing his eyes. When the dust settled, Alec got to his feet–or rather, paws. He was now a slightly larger-than-average, black, shorthair cat, with different colored eyes: one gold, one violet. 'Oh, hell. I might use him as an FC for Zane’s dad. He’s a lot older and gruffer looking than the dude I have now.

So when he heard of a possible witch in town he’d kind of jumped some at the prospect of helping the small town out. Which is why he ends up at a motel in town, though he’s at a somewhat dead end in his searching shortly after hitting town. Sam was a lot of the brains when it came to hunting, but he was laid up with a broken arm. So he’d made his way to the diner in town to grab a bite while he thought about his next step.
