Something that fits with this theme is lesbian pulp fiction, these were really popular in the 1950s. During this time it was actually the publishers policy that anything involving lesbians ended up with the main character unsatisfied. That means that the characters had to end up unhappy, alone, dead, committing suicide, going mentally insane, etc. Unfortunately there was a time where characters were required to end up unhappy, but that's not the case anymore. So, this is happening by choice now.
