Husband, two kiddos under two and myself booked a one night stay at a beautiful Airbnb for about $600 after taxes etc. We arrived and everything exceeded our expectations. I was getting ready for bed and went out to the kitchen/living room to grab something from one of our bags and I found not one, not two, but THREE enormous cockroaches. I run to the bedroom to tell my husband who comes back out with me and we discover at least 10-20 more cockroaches throughout the house, ranging from babies to oversized adults. My husband is disgusted, I’m terrified and thinking about our immunocompromised/mouth breathing toddler, so we leave in the middle of the night and go to a hotel down the street.

We have contacted the host, not flat out asking for a refund but… we were kind of hoping that would be the resolution? This was a middle to higher end Airbnb for $600 a night. We explained the situation and sent photos but the host response was essentially: “sorry for the inconvenience, we have a monthly pest service and this is the first we are hearing of this.” I cannot wrap my head around if that were true how they would have such a massive pest problem. We took plenty of horrifying videos and pictures of the roaches. I’m not new to cockroaches, I’m from FL and I understand you can’t do much for a few cockroaches here or there. But these roaches were EVERYWHERE. AIO? Would you not have left in the middle of the night upon discovering the largest cockroach infestation you’ve ever seen? Do we not deserve a full refund? The host seems to think so… trying to get in contact with Airbnb support now.

\*\*\*EDIT: Airbnb has fully refunded us. Thank you to everyone who advised us. The host asked for documentation off the app— Airbnb advised us not to contact them off the app. For some reason, we are now unable to leave a review on the property and cannot warn others of the roach activity. We will no longer be using Airbnb.

They don't live in my house, and it's absolutely disgusting, but nothing can really be done to stop this. The Grand Hyatt, Hotel 1, it doesn't matter, they will wonder in from the jungle sometimes.

The rental cars in Hawaii- a lot of them are infested, too. A mainlander might not know to check before leaving. I don't think people realize how bad it is in these areas.

I would STILL say an infestation like you describe is disgusting and unacceptable. It's weird that they're saying it's the first they have heard of it but also not having a stronger reaction to the videos.”
