There is also a bar in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which serves a dish called Vladimir Poutine! It’s poutine topped with pierogi. It’s not as good as it sounds, alas.

Okay, going to answer 12 and 16 together because I sort of have the same answer for both.

12. Any books that disappointed you? & 16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?

There’s lots of books that I found mildly disappointing (and none I found horrifically overhyped), but I think Take a Hint, Dani Brown fits both of these best. It got a ton of hype in the sort of progressive feminist romance circles I run in, and I was very excited because the heroine is a bisexual PhD student, but it was just... okay. I think the author doesn’t actually know much about PhD students, so it all felt slightly off, and then that made the whole character feel a little underdeveloped. (There were other issues with her character too, like the male lead had a pretty well done gradual unveiling of his Tragic Backstory, and the female lead had it vaguely hinted at once or twice and then dumped on us 3/4 of the way in, when it felt more like an excuse than a built in part of the character.) Also the obligatory end of book breaking up and getting back together was done extremely poorly, which moved this solidly into meh territory.

13. What were your least favorite books of the year?

Okay, buckle up for me explaining In Five Years, a terrible garbage book that was 3rd place in the Goodreads Choice romance category despite being very much NOT a romance and also NOT good. Spoilers to come, but also don’t read this book.

Anyways, meet Dani, the sort of rich straight person who has figured out the perfect ages to get married/have kids/get a promotion/move to a cool neighborhood and also the sort of rich straight person who thinks that her and her boyfriend’s combined very high six-figure income “really isn’t that much” because it’s so hard to find an apartment in a doorman building in a “good neighborhood” on that. So. Already not my favorite person, but, hey, good for her, she does seem to have the perfect job/boyfriend/life, and she gets engaged at “just the right age” of 28. But then! The night after she gets engaged, she has a prophetic dream of herself sleeping with a different man five years in the future. Scandal.

Flash forward five years, and her life is still going perfectly (except she still hasn’t scheduled her wedding, a sign that she Isn’t Really Happy), when she suddenly meets the guy from the dream. Except, oh no, he’s dating her best friend, a flighty blonde who slept around with everyone in her 20s and never knew true love until she met this incredibly boring straight man. (Can you guess who the only bisexual character in this book is?) Dani has some very boring internal conflict about this for a bit until, right around the halfway point, we discover that this is secretly a cancer book! The best friend has cancer, Dani makes it all about herself a lot of the time, and yes, Dani does kiss her friend’s fiance while said friend is dying of cancer. And to top it off, the prophetic vision? Well, it does come true, but only because she sleeps with this friend’s fiance right after the friend’s funeral! What a good, romantic ending. (These characters do not end up together. This is not a romance!)

jokes aside, I’ve only seen it with the Netflix and the Youtube subs. They are both. Bad. I prefer the Youtube subs (extremely) marginally because at least they’re amusing in a bootleg anime from the early 2000s kinda way, and there’s no way you could watch them and think “ah yes, these are accurate” so there’s less chance of people coming away thinking they’ve completely understood something they haven’t. On the other hand, they border on incomprehensible sometimes TTATT

I’ve heard that the Viki subs might be okay? Can’t vouch for them personally since I didn’t watch it there, but I heard they might be the least offensive of the bunch? I believe Suibian subs is doing a resub as well, but I haven’t been keeping up with it either and thus can’t speak to how they compare ahaha. /o\

I’ve had many people say that it is fine without the series. Personally, I think watching the first 8 or so episodes of the series gives a good grounding of the characters, and the story spoils like, most of the series.  The first season or so of Merlin is pretty good, though initially frustrating for someone deeply familiar with Arthurian legend. Then the writers seem to suddenly realize that they’re writing a very “out of the box” thing and scramble badly to write themselves back into the box. The most frustrating part of this for me was that by the end of season 5, literally every single nuanced, complex female character from early seasons has been corrupted in some way and turned into a cardboard cutout, and every. single. new. female character is evil, a spy, an evil spy, etc. and also a cardboard cutout. The writers did NOT understand women in any way, shape or form. Also, making Guinevere black is fine, but then SIMULTANEOUSLY turning her into a maidservant feels awfully racist even if they wanted to write her back into a princess. Anyway, it is worth watching some Merlin because the actors are so much better than the writers deserved and the actors themselves are compelling as hell, but the stories are often frustrating and the overall arc gets worse the farther into it you get, and I stuck with it for 5 seasons because they have so many shitty plotholes that hurt characters I cared about that I knew the fanfic would be AMAZEBALLS.

This is a really good question. It’s aninfamously complicated series, but since we’re only focusing on one plot-line, theimportant parts are these:

There are two main landmasses, Westeros(map!) and Essos (map!). Westeros is where the “Seven Kingdoms” are, and most ofthe action in the books and show happens there. Essos is where the Dothrakiplotline happens, so that’s the setting of this story. Most of the “civilization”in Essos is along the coastlines, with the center of the continent beinggrasslands populated by roaming Dothraki khalasars.

The Targaryens used to rule Westeros,and they also used to have dragons. Sometimes they went crazy, probably onaccount of their tendency to marry siblings to each other. The dragons havebeen gone for a century or more, but the family still ruled until about 20years before the story starts. At that point, Mad King Aerys was deposed (notnecessarily a bad thing), and his heir Rhaegar was killed in battle. (His wifeand two* children were also killed, in really unpleasant ways.) This makes Aerys’younger son the heir—Montparnasse in this fusion. His mother escapes with himto Essos, where she immediately dies giving birth to his brotherEnjolras.

Montparnasse and Enjolras spend thenext 18 years on the run from King Robert and his agents/spies/assassins. (He’s afraid that the Targaryens still haveenough support to try to take the throne back.)

Montparnasse has a lot of his father’s lessawesome traits and is a terrible brother. They find an ally in a noble from thecity of Pentos, on the far western coast of Essos, and that’s where the storybegins.
