Reality TV attracts millions of viewers and thousands of hopefuls, but at what cost?
I found this pretty interesting as a K-Entertainment fan, because many Korean reality shows make no secret about the directors and script writers behind the fourth wall. Invincible Youth (a show where a handful of girl group members learn how to run a farm) is one of my favorite examples- they often joke about their "characters" on the show and the cameras pan over to show the production crew hard at work while the girls are on screen.
That said, there's a lot that's hidden from the public eye, as Brad Moore, aka the white drummer guy of Busker Busker (some people call them "Korean Coldplay"- not because they sound like Coldplay, but because they are that ridiculously popular despite having only debuted back in early 2012) explained in a recent interview. He eventually issued an apology along the lines of "I didn't understand the Korean culture at the time," though Korean readers have been quick to point out that this is likely a bullshit excuse concocted by his label because the practices Moore outlines in his interview are not in any way inherently Korean.
Just some thoughts.
