Chapter 4: Lost and Found
Summary: Tomura continues his escort missions, defies the laws of life and death to make sure he's there for *all* his friends, and brings the story full circle.
Swallowing hard, Tomura knelt in front of Mon and gently took her face in his hands. āMon-chan, I need to break a rule,ā he whispered. Her ears pricked up. āI think the broadcast is a little behind, so I died already, but I need to go toĀ beforeĀ I died.ā His throat tightened, his fingers prickling as his quirk stirred in reaction to his sudden spike in adrenaline. āNot far, just a few minutes. IĀ needĀ to be there for Dabi. Heās so fucking stubborn! If he dies without someone there, I know he'll do something stupid! I don't know what happens to people who die and refuse to leave, but I bet itās not good. Dabi as a vengeful ghost isn't something anyone wants. So, I'm going to try.ā He smiled crookedly and rubbed behind her ears. āI donāt know who runs this crazy afterlife business, but I doubt theyāll be happy with me. Thatās just fine. Iām a villain, breaking rules is kinda my thing, but youāre just Mon-chan. Iām not even sure why Iām explaining this to you.ā That was a lie, and Tomura knew it. He was explaining to delay his trip, to spend a little bit longer with his dog, just in case he got on Godās or Buddha's or Whoeverās actual shit list with the stunt he was about to pull.Ā
Giving her one last hug, he stood up. āMon, go home.ā He pointed to the waiting door. Mon whined, her ears pinning back. āGo home,ā he repeated sternly. Still whining, little stub of a tail tucked, Mon reluctantly went to the door, paused one last time to see if Tomura would change his mind, then nudged the door open and went inside.Ā
Letting out the breath heād been holding, Tomura turned and headed down the hall, his black coat flapping out behind him. He reached out as he walked, running his fingers along the wall, letting Decay out. His quirk couldnāt touch this world anymore, but he imagined it eating away what it could touch. He could picture it perfectly, Decay destroying this hall, destroying any barriers that got in front of him, letting him walk wherever he wanted.Ā
The world around him went black. Not black as in behind his eyelids or the times heād been locked in a pitch dark room for training. This black wasā¦Ā empty.Ā A weird sort ofĀ hungryĀ empty that ate up every other sensation. There was nothing to hear, no echo of his footsteps or the sound of his own breathing. He couldnāt feel anything either, not the clothes on his skin or the beat of his heart, not even the feel of the floor beneath his feet. Heās not even sure heās stillĀ walking.Ā No sound, no sight, no sensation⦠except a sudden and overwhelming sense of beingĀ watchedĀ that exploded out of nowhere.
Tomura fell to his knees, or thought he did, suddenly hyperventilating. The back of his neck prickled, and he expected to feel teeth sink into the tender skin. It was like every nightmare where he ran from something invisible and deadly, but his body refused to cooperate and he woke up just before it caught himā only this time,Ā he refused to wake up.
āLet me be there,ā he whispered. And he couldĀ hearĀ himself. The sound made him jump, and the way each word fell from his lips like it was weighted was almost as terrifying as whatever was watching him. Swallowing, he forced himself back to his feet, and kept walking as he spoke, āI failed them all. I let them die when I shouldāve saved them. I canāt undo that, but let me be there for this at least!Ā Please!ā
He struggled forward a few more feet, then the feeling of eyes on him vanished.Ā There was a nearly audibleĀ snap!Ā and he tripped⦠and fell into a frozen wasteland.Ā
The switch from literalĀ nothingĀ to this was painful, a complete sensory overload, and Tomura had to spend a moment coming back to himself. When he could finally think like a human again and not a small, scared animal, he looked around.Ā
Everything was coated in white frost, and thick fog swirled around, obscuring his vision. Dead or not, a shiver slipped down Tomuraās spine and his breath puffed out in a little cloud of condensation. His teeth actuallyĀ chattered.Ā āD-Damn it, Da-Dabi. W-What d-d-did you dād-do?āĀ
