A bright line up of interesting indigenous grapes last night with @winesofportugal at the Savoy: Verdelho, Azal, Codega do Larinho, Samarrinho, Avesso, Bical, Jampal, Rufete, Sousão, Tinta Grossa, Ramisco, Alicante Bouchet and Moscatel de Setúbal all quirky, fresh and unusual. Highlights included the Azal-whose nose reminded of smoked citrus and orange peel, the Avesso - grown on granite soils had a creaminess underlying it's own stark citrus, the Jampal redolent of honey and quince and floral-the flavour profile perhaps of an Alvariñho and Viognier but with the texture of Chardonnay... the Bical was also hot stuff. Lots more on show today I believe at the Wines of Portugal tasting, go check them out #winesofportugal #aworldofdifference #indigenousgrapes #trysomethingdifferent #wine (at The Savoy Grill)
