Meet India's first aircraft carrier- INS Vikrant. Originally a British Navy Ship named HMS Hercules, India purchased the carrier in 1957 and commissioned it in 1961 as the first aircraft carrier of Indian Navy. The ship played a vital role during many wars. In December 1961 the ship was deployed for the annexation of Goa(Operation Vijay) from the Portuguese Indian territory. Due to growing war with Pakistan it was difficult and dangerous to keep the carrier exposed. The major threat was during Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 when Pakistan deployed US-built submarine PNS Ghazi. Ghazi specially reached Bay of Bengal to destroy INS Vikrant. But Ghazi, meanwhile itself sank off the Visakhapatnam coast under mysterious circumstances. After that Vikrant supported a naval blockade of East Pakistan. After many years of service she was formally decommissioned on 31 January 1997. . .
