the hallway outside jujutsu high is quieter than usual, the kind of quiet that makes every small sound feel like itβs being watched.
youβre sitting on the edge of the steps with your notebook open, but youβve been staring at the same line for five minutes without reading it. the problem isnβt the homework.
itβs the black-haired boy a few feet away.
megumi fushiguro is sitting on the steps below you, elbows resting on his knees, looking like heβs doing absolutely nothingβyet somehow still completely focused. shikigami training, probably. or thinking. with megumi, itβs always hard to tell.
a light breeze passes through the courtyard and flips one of your pages.
βyouβre not doing it,β he says suddenly, not looking up.
you blink. βdoing what?β
βstudying.β finally, he glances over his shoulder at you. his eyes are calm, but thereβs that faint hint of judgment he never quite hides well. βyouβve been staring at the same page for ten minutes.β
you huff. βi was reading it.β
βyou werenβt.β
you press your lips together, caught. βokay, fine. maybe i got distracted.β
thereβs a pause.
megumi turns back forward, like the conversation is over. βthatβs inefficient.β
βwow,β you say, leaning back on your hands. βyouβre really warm and comforting today.β
ββ¦i didnβt say anything wrong.β
you watch him for a second, then slide down one step so youβre closer to him. βyou always do that.β
βdo what?β
βact like youβre not paying attention, but you are.β
that actually makes him pause.
for a moment, he doesnβt respond. the wind moves again, soft against the trees above you. then, quieter than before, he says, βyouβre distracting.β
your heart trips over itself for half a second.
you try to play it off. βme? distracting you? iβm literally just sitting here.β
megumi finally looks at you again, and this time his gaze lingers a little longer than usual. βexactly.β
you stare at him.
he looks away first.
ββ¦thatβs not fair,β you mumble.
he shrugs slightly. βitβs true.β
silence settles again, but itβs different nowβless empty, moreβ¦ aware.
you lean your shoulder lightly against his. he doesnβt move away.
after a second, he says, almost reluctantly, βfinish your work. then we can go eat.β
you smile without meaning to. βis that your version of hanging out?β
ββ¦if you want to call it that.β
you pick up your pen again, but this time it doesnβt feel like studying is the only thing happening anymore.
and when you glance over at megumi, still pretending he isnβt paying attention, you think maybe heβs not as quiet as he looks.

Anyone who's dismissing a person for being self diagnosed has no idea what it's like to not have access to a diagnosis and eventual support. They're not going through life like "uwu. I'm so β¨neurospicyβ¨". Literally every day is a struggle but no one takes them seriously and they don't get access to support and medication that could help them, thereby the quality of their life is significantly reduced.
Also, as someone who has studied in this field, and spoken to multiple professors who have actively worked as therapists, you are hit, pretty quickly, with the gap in understanding that exists in many (especially but not limited to) non-western countries. I've legit had them tell me they don't usually "prefer" to give out diagnosis because they think the person is gonna use it only to access benefits and not to attend therapy sessions to 'cure their disability'
So what exactly is a person suspecting a disorder/disability to do in this situation? Medical neglect and gaslighting is a thing. And sadly, is pretty common.
So before judging someone for being self-diagnosed, please try to understand what it must be like for them...

I can draw my own interpretation of it, though I have to note:
This is technically not my 'concept'. I've heavily taken inspiration from Takebayashi's 'The Conception' (A fanwork from the TWST Beckon of the Mirror 2021 event) The main adjustments I made were the removal of spinning wheels along the body as well as the mask.
