Chapter 15:Ā Ā āIf you have tears, prepare to shed them now...ā
...she was trembling as she watched him, knowing she had asked for his honesty and dreading what he would be revealing; her heart ached not only for what she had guessed was coming, but for the pain of this man who thoroughly owned her heart. Ā She leaned closer to lay the ghost of a kiss on his cheek, and whispered against his ear, āItās alright, Ben. Ā I can take it. Ā Make your confessionāso we can both start to heal.ā
He groaned softly, then raised his headāhis profile so heartbreakingly beautiful despite the situation, that Vickiās breath caught. Ā Inhaling deeply as he steeled himself, he finally turned to face her, āIām afraid youāll never look at me the same way againābut that would be exactly what I deserveā¦ā
āOh my darling, donāt you know by now that your name is written on my heart? Ā Indelibly.ā Ā That simple truth, spoken aloud, was enough to dispel her immediate fears, so that she assured him gently, āTrust in that, Ben. Ā Please. Trust that my love for you cannot be shaken.ā
āTrust,ā he mused sadly, āThatās what it all comes down to, doesnāt it? Ā And now Iāve broken yours.ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
āNot irretrievably, my love,ā she promised.Ā Aiming to make it easier for him, Vicki admitted, āI was an utter fool trying to make you jealous. Ā Stupidly thinking I should give you a taste of how I was feeling.ā Ā She sighed hard, and her voice was rich with regret, āBut once Iād made a start of it, it spun well out of my control.ā
Ā āI know, love. Ā And Iām sorry I left you without a better alternativeā¦ā
āWe made that choice together, Ben,ā she reminded him, āThinking it would be best for all three of us.ā
āIf I had to choose again,ā his voice broke, edged with frustration, āIād say to hell with the show. Ā Iād make the break from Viola, and then a clean start of our life together.ā
āAs would I, my love. Ā But thereās no going back.ā Ā Vicki took his face in her hands, recommitting each freckle and fine smile line to memory, vowing to never again be the cause of the pain so clear in his eyes (while knowing that he was about to bring a sizable bit of pain her way), and searching for words to comfort him. Ā She brushed his lips lightly with her own--though she longed to kiss him in fullāthen breathed against his mouth, what wisdom she could, āWhatās gone, and whatās past help, should be past grief.ā
She felt him relax from a bit of the strain he was under, as he murmured, āThe Winterās Tale?ā Ā Vicki gave a small shrug, and a pleased little smile that even in their gravest moments, they still spoke the same language. Ā āAlright then,ā he sighed hard, āItās useless to delay any furtherāand you deserve the truth.ā...
