On the Nature of Spirits, Volume 3

“All spirits with a corruption level of 50% or higher are perhaps most well known for their tendency to consume souls. As we have established, this is because they are unable to generate magic of their own.

Contrary to popular belief, souls are not necessary to their survival. A ghost can spend their entire afterlife without consuming a single soul, and still be perfectly fine.

However, there is one condition, and it is that the spirit never or rarely uses magic. If they were to do so, they would be forced to draw magic from their own body, effectively weakening them and, if done too often, possibly leading to Second Death. Much like a living being who is starving and yet continues to overwork themselves, the ghost will experience an increasingly strong ‘hunger’ for souls the more magic they use. It will be even worse if they are near one or more souls, and unless the spirit is incredibly strong willed, they are likely to lose control of themselves."
