I sigh as she runs her fingers through my two-tone hair, it’s been months since Lord Liu Kang took Bi-Han away in hopes of restoring him and both of us are on edge. Cyrax abandoned us so we only have each other now and I know she feels as lonely and vulnerable as I do.

“What’s wrong baobei? You seem so tense tonight,” she asks as her hand stops its movements.

“I miss him, the kids miss their father they don’t understand what happened, particularly not Bingbing,” I sigh and turn toward Sektor burying my face in her chest before I start crying.

“I know you do, I miss him too, but I have a plan, I don’t want you to worry about me but I’m going after him,” she says as she wraps her arms around me pulling me closer, her warmth and presence calming me slightly.

“Sektor you can’t! Who will lead the clan?! Lord Liu Kang put you in charge while he tries to restore Bi-Han,” I try and reason with my husband’s lover, my lover.

“You will lead the clan Sol, you’re the Grandmaster’s wife, I will bring him back to us, I swear,” she holds my face with both of her calloused hands, her brown eyes sparkling with tears she would never allow herself to shed.

There’s a loud knock at the door and we’re startled before Sektor throws on her crimson robe and heads to the door. “What is it,” she orders before pulling the heavy oak doors open.

“Grandmistress, we’ve located him, but that’s not all there’s a man here who looks just like Bi-Han claiming to be Sub-Zero, what do we do?” The warrior asks as I reach for my fur-lined robe and make my way over.

“Another Sub-Zero?” We both ask in unison before I continue, “it must be Bi-Han from another timeline?”

The warrior turns to me and speaks again, “he claims to be milady, he also asked for you by name.”

“Take us to him,” Sektor replies as she pushes the door all the way open and takes my hand, pulling me close.

We weave through the stone temple complex making our way deep into the dungeons, there chained to the wall is Bi-Han but not Bi-Han at the same time. His eyes white as snow standing out from his heavily armored body, it’s freezing in the cell, the same cold Sektor and I are all too familiar with. I’m drawn to him immediately in a way I can’t explain, my heart races and I can’t stop myself from caressing his face, “Bi-Han?” I ask my breath shaking and coming out in a condensed puff.

“Sol, qīn, you’re still alive, I wasn’t too late this time,” he replies, there’s clear relief in his voice.

“Of course I’m alive, what do you mean?” I ask as Sektor pulls me back.

“Careful Sol, we don’t know anything about him, he looks like Bi-Han and he very well may be but he’s not our Bi-Han,” she cautions.

“Our Bi-Han?” He asks looking up at the two of us, “why are you so close to her? Who are you?”

“What you have Sol in your timeline but no Sektor?” She asks putting herself between me and this new Bi-Han.

“In my timeline, Sektor is a man, and an enemy of mine,” Sub-Zero replies in a gruff voice.

“In this timeline Sektor is your most loyal companion and our beloved girlfriend,” I reply as I peek out from behind her.

“Interesting,” he mumbles trying to digest this information, “I have two lovers in this timeline, how intriguing.”

“You mentioned you weren’t too late, what happened to me in your timeline?” I ask bypassing my pitbull of a girlfriend to get closer.

“Scorpion, the whole Shirai Ryu massacred everyone, Kuai Liang burned you to death in front of my eyes, I’ve been searching for a timeline where you’re ok ever since,” his voice is hoarse with grief, regret, and a hint of longing.

“Kuai Liang did but we’re family,” I stutter shocked by the news we’ve just heard.

“I wouldn’t put it past him, you weren’t there Sol, you didn’t see the way he attacked Bi-Han the disdain he showed when Liu Kang sealed him away,” Sektor chimes in as she moves closer to Sub-Zero.

“My entire timeline has been ruined and I’ve ruined countless more trying to regain what I lost,” Sub-Zero growls in frustration pulling at his chains. “Let me keep you safe qīn, release me, please.”

“What if he’s lying, what if he’s here to kill you, Sol what are you doing?!” Sektor exclaims as I reach for the guard's keys.

“He’s not lying Sektor, I felt immediately drawn to him the minute we stepped in, he’s our Bi-Han just from another timeline, he won’t harm me, he won’t harm us,” I feel confident in my decision as I unlock his restraints, immediately I’m enveloped in a bone-chilling cold as his arms around me pulling me close.

“Finally,” he whispers, his cold lips claiming mine in a passionate kiss.

“Bi-Han won’t like this Sol,” Sektor cautions but I can tell she’s just as drawn to this incarnation of our husband as I am.

“What happened to your Sub-Zero? You mentioned a fight with Kuai Liang,” Sub-Zero asks reluctantly breaking the kiss.

“Havik happened, titan Havik to be specific, he corrupted Bi-Han with his Khaos magic and Liu Kang has sealed him away in hopes of restoring him,” Sektor answers as she motions for the guards to open the cell and begins to lead us back to our room.

“I know where he’s been taken, to the Temple of Elements, I was once locked away there when I gave into darkness, the Raiden of my timeline was able to restore me with the power of the Jinsei chambers. I was a mindless slave to Quan Chi and went by the name,” he’s cut off as Sektor interrupts him to finish.

“Noob Saibot, yes that’s what ours goes by now,” she frowns but her eyes look as though they’re calculating the ultimate rescue plan.

“I will help you retrieve him if it means getting to stay with Sol,” Sub-Zero’s deep voice echoes in the stone hallway.

“I’m a little jealous you two are apparently a thing in every timeline but I only get you in one,” Sektor pouts, wrapping an arm around mine.

Rhett crept silently to the front door, unlocking it and throwing one last look behind him. Everyone was still asleep.

Success, Rhett thought as he slinked out the door. 

Getting into the car, he sighed in relief before he noticed it. Sitting on the passenger seat was a basket with his big blanket he got for Christmas on top. A note in his wife’s familiar handwriting was delicately perched in the middle, as if it were a bow. Hesitantly, he picked up the paper and smiled after absorbing what it said.

I told you went you first sent this to me that it was a doozy, lol! 

It’s probably shorter than what it should be, but it was a warm-up piece. Hopefully it’s still easy enough to follow and all of the allusions come through. 

Slight spoilers for Episode Ignis, allusions to depression and death. You’ve been warned. 

Ignis + Gladio = “I thought we were family.”

By the time Gladio realized what was happening, and that hewas powerless to stop it, it was too late. Ash stung his eyes, and cinders leftscars on the feathers of his eagle tattoo. In the distance, he could see Ignis’soutline, hunch over, grasping his face. The world was silent, though. Not eventhe hasty, heavy sound of his footfalls reached his ears. All that remained washimself and the man he loved.

He had to get to Ignis. If nothing else, he didn’t want todie alone.

“Iggy!” he hollered, but no sound came out. He tried again,and it was the same. The closer he got – he was getting closer, wasn’t he? –the more he could see that Ignis was fading. His eyes were burning a scorchingpurple, and the agonizing scream that tore through him was silent, just likeeverything else. What the hell was going on?

He remembered Ardyn, and escaping with Ravus. He rememberedan airship and the keep, where they had initially found Ignis. And then light,a white light, and nothingness. Everything felt like slow-motion, but his heartwas racing, his eyes were definitely watering, and Ignis…Ignis was definitely burningand in pain.

‘No,’ he thought, and his heart hammered in his chest sofast that he thought he’d run out of breath, ‘I won’t lose you, too.’

Ping.

Gladio stopped. Everything stopped. The white nothingnessaround him cracked, and suddenly they were in Insomnia, standing in the middleof his bedroom, some place that Gladio knew was no longer in one piece.

“You always were weak,” Ignis said, or rather, Ignis’s bodysaid. A lump formed in Gladio’s throat, and he took a step closer. He wasalmost able to touch Ignis. Just a few more steps, then –

“How many times has your king nearly died because of yourshortcomings?” Clarus’s voice echoed out of Ignis’s mouth.

“But I’ve saved him countless more!” Gladio argued.

“And what about me?” Iris’s voice replaced his father’s. “Ithought we were family! But you left me behind in a world of darkness for aking that’s too juvenile to rule anything!”

Gladio’s fists clenched and unclenched, and his eyes dartedeverywhere, unsure and scared of what was safe to look at and what couldpotentially happen if he stopped looking. Whatever this was, it wasn’t Ignis,but if this wasn’t Ignis, where was he?

“That’s not true,” he argued, but this time it was muchweaker.

“You know, big guy, you probably could have just stayed inInsomnia,” Prompto’s voice said.

“What good is a cracked shield, anyway,” Noctis’s voicedtaunted. “I would have been better off with your dad.”

Gladio shook his head, and was wise enough to back up asIgnis’s body advanced on him, until the back of his knees hit the bed. Thesprings bounced under his weight, and the sides sunk as Ignis’s body climbedover him. Slender hands, hands that Gladio knew all too well, slid up hischest, and elegant fingers gripped his chin. Purple eyes that should be greenbore into his own, holding his gaze. Ignis kissed him.

“My dear, have you figured it out yet?” He cooed afterGladio didn’t return the kiss. That was Ignis’s voice. He’d know that voiceanywhere. “You simply aren’t needed. Our little family runs just fine withoutyou.”

“You don’t mean that,” he interjected.

“Don’t I? There’s nothing you can give me that I can’t getfrom either of the boys.” His heart squeezed, and Gladio forced his eyes shut.The room around him was dark, cold, and it felt less and less like home. Funnyhow all he wanted was to go home, but this wasn’t home. Home was with hissister, with the Noctis and Prompto, with Ignis.

This wasn’t home, but where was home? Was was Ignis? Wherewas he?

“You’re not real,” he grit between his teeth.

“Oh, I am very real, Gladio,” Ignis smirked, and Gladiocould still feel the cool touch of his fingers on his skin. “I am themanifestation of your fears. I can will everything that’s ever plagued yourthoughts or haunted your dreams into existence with a single breath.”

“Let me go,” Gladio pleaded, but it was weak. He was weak.His father was right. Noctis would have been better off without him. They allwould be.

“Let you go?” Ignis mimicked, then cackled. “You’re soblinded by your own internal fears that you haven’t even noticed that you’refree to leave.”

…what?

Gladio’s eyes flew open. Ignis was still atop him, but waseasy to knock off in his position. There were no chains or ties keeping him onthe bed, and the doorway was wide open. On the other side there were people,people he loved and recognized, people that were trying to get to him.

Prompto, Noctis, Iris…Ignis.

The least he could so was meet them.

Gladio took several deep breaths, then pushed the imposterIgnis aside with a surprising amount of ease. How could he have let himselfbecome so overwhelmed? His steps were lighter, and he actually felt like he wasmoving instead of running in place. He was actually getting closer to thelight, to the other side.

He felt warm as he stepped through the door, and he acceptedthe hugs and concerned presses of lips to his cheeks. This was home. This washis family.
