What a welcome...
I so rarely ever post but man, this has been bugging the fuck out of me. For many years, I kind of kept myself mostly out of the international K-Pop fandom scene. Being into J-Rock and J-pop, the Korean scene was a natural extension but I rather actively avoided it... Partly because I knew how ungodly infectious it was and because I have always wanted to do K-Pop choreo classes (because damn those dances look fun) but never thought it was something that I would do, so it felt better to just avoid it entirely. Until the past few months, anyway, because a Twitch streamer I have come to enjoy watching plays quite a bit of K-Pop. So my little collection of about 20 songs grew to nearly 150 songs and counting as I come across more. So to shorten things up, I have found a place to take those classes and I am doing so, happily. In part to get out of the house, because it’s something I’ve wanted to do, it’s some exercise, and to hopefully make some friends because I moved into the state last summer and know only a handful of people I would call friends. None of which who are at all into K-Pop, so while I can bond with people on other things, I can’t so much with this. Right off the bat, my favourite K-Pop group became BigBang. The boys, the videos, the songs, I love it. Unfortunately, this occurred literal days before the scandal with Seungri broke out in international news. This has made shit extremely difficult. I would love to find some people, even online at this point, to be able to fan over things. But the VIP community is so ridiculously divided over this issue it’s insane. The fandom is practically tearing itself apart and here I am... new VIP.. like...
Now, because I don’t have a history with this band, I have no particular feelings about Seungri other than disappointment and disapproval. Watching old interviews, variety shows, I could have really liked him but that investigation in progress sat in the back of my head the whole time. I didn’t hate him, I didn’t think anything in particular, because I wanted to see how the investigation went (making sure to use some resources a librarian friend gave me to help find unbiased sources to get the information from). With all that has come out, I don’t still understand how there are people that think he’s innocent. Do I think he has done everything that he is being accused of? No. But he’s admitted to soliciting prostitution, it’s come out today confirmed that he gave some girls a test run before providing them to investors. Knowing that women seem to be like business objects is just... disgusting. I can’t say that I hate him, still, but I do not approve of his business partners/friends, decisions and actions, as they are rather deplorable. One chunk of the fandom is screaming innocence and ignoring the admissions and evidence right in front of their faces of what he IS guilty of. Calling those that don’t believe he’s innocent fake fans - which is complete and utter childish bullshit btw - and defending him despite there being evidence and admissions otherwise (again, not to every charge, but a few). Then there’s another chunk on the opposite end of the spectrum who are wholly against Seungri now and acting just as poorly as those who are defending him - just as childish. I can’t support BigBang as 5 at this point and I am hoping that the other four come back and continue on, because I have come to love them. I don’t want to see this just end because of this. At the same time? I’m also hoping that the other 4 were not involved in any way, because I would be just as let down by them as I am by Seungri and his actions. The hate in this band’s fandom is fucking insane. Where are the sane fans hiding? Where are the OT4 supporters that aren’t throwing eggs at the SR fans? Where are the OT5 supporters that recognize that SR done fucked up and isn’t a cute innocent panda as they think he is? I feel like I’m in my own little world at this point just trying to enjoy the band, waiting for military enlistment to be over, when it would be nice to have some company without people wanting to pummel each other over this.
