Hell yeah, you love to see it.

For my new followers and anyone who hasn't seen me talk at great length about generative AI before: it's a fascinating technology with many potential applications, that is being misapplied by capitalist interests to create addictive consumption patterns and misinformation at staggering rates. These rates of production are underpinned by massive amounts of labour exploitation, especially in developing economies.

Every one of these failings is the result of the capitalist system, not the technology.

Using AI is morally neutral. Developing AI is a large resource drain with the consequences that such drains always have. It could also, easily be resolved by enforcing open information sharing to collapse parallel development of the same tools which is where the waste comes in.

AI is no more dangerous to the end user than any other software.

And frankly, it allows me to do some things that I cannot do without it. Often, things I used to be able to do, before I got so sick.

So, I am "pro AI." I believe generative AI development is a worthwhile endeavour.

However I would like the capitalist garbage forcing it into every sector to fund parallel and wasteful development and harvest user data created through addictive techniques to stop.

Bottom is the finished piece with extensive inpainting and then extensive photoshopping, plus some transparency for fun. Took about 8 hours all told.

It's all just so. Exhausting. And like. Boring. And frustratingly so! Like, if we're going to expend all of this energy lambasting something, can we not lambast corporate profit structures or, like. The fascists?

What happened to punching nazis, you know? I miss when people really really wanted to punch nazis, often to the point of being a little distressing.

Now everyone is dead set on making sure that AI is scapegoated for every horrible panopticon over-reach AND every independent human actor, as though no one human was involved in the deployment of this technology!

It's enough to make you feel like a fucking lunatic with a conspiracy board, expect it's all just????? Patently obvious and true if you stop frothing about your favourite hate-toy for 10 minutes to consider the facts?

I'm so tired, mate. I'm so fuckin tired.

And I want to be clear, I'm firmly "pro AI" in that the tool has fantastic research and artistic implications! And I am still anti-capitalist because I do not simply concede new technologies to fascists and capitalists just because Elon Musk said so.

I didn't think "Elon Musk said only his little nazi sycophants are allowed to like LLMs" was that compelling, but for some reason every third "leftist" and "progressive" I talk to is gagging to do exactly what Musk says and abandon the development of this tool entirely to his fuckshittery?

Why are we just going along with that????

I'm so fucking.

Yes, yes, you're very smart and cool and much more impressive an artist than me, and your precious ego need not feel threatened by my work because you exist on a plane far above me in terms of skill, talent, inspiration, and execution. We're all very proud of you.

Left is a Betty Boop image I generated, and middle is my photoshop styling the image as Jax from Amazing Digital Circus, and right is an AI re-render of my photoshop.

It can be fun to see what the more "traditional" methods of digital editing can get you to, compared to AI. Like, here, you can see the failure to be "on model" very easily: because Jax and Betty are cartoon characters the image generator wants to make an anime 2.5 digital illustration. But that causes Jax's characteristic details to be lost in the attempts to conform to anime-influenced digital art aesthetics. For example, the changes to eyes, and the attempts to add a red blush.

Okay so this one would be a "doodle" if "doodle" was something that meaningfully applied to this workflow.

As you can see, there's not a lot of difference from the initial output (left) to the final piece (right). I think from start to finish it was.... 1.5 hours? Maybe? Almost all of that was manual correction in GIMP and, you know. The colours (which were also manual, as is typical; I hate the colours AI comes up with lol).

I actually really like how the colours came out in this, though. I know it's a far cry from my usual ludicrously over-rendered iridescence, but... it looks good! I set out to make something that would work as, like, a food mascot. And damn, dude, she sure as shit looks like a food mascot.
