various artists – image as theme (resadtcom11, 2012)
various artists – image as theme (resadtcom11, 2012)
Some time ago in 2012, resonan released a compilation entitled ‘image as theme’ and the title is selfreferential obviously. Various artists dealing with sound as a medium were asked to produce a work that should interpret/respond/reflect or anything the same image and the resonan guys gathered everything in a frugal packaged cd that had on its cover the image to which we refer, that represents the packaging of an antipyretic drug along with its expiration date (12.2012) and the logo of the company that produces it.
Being completely ignorant on what these pills (probably) do, how are they ‘properly’ used as a pharmako (medicinal drug) or pharmaki (poison ) (the words in greek for both terms share the same ‘root’), if this picture is ‘original’ or ‘photshoped’ (for example if the expiration date ‘real’ or is it another reference to the ‘end’ of the world) and as the decription of the reasoning behind the compilation is (taken from resonan.com) simply ‘8 interpretations of an image’ I guess that the best that this release can do is provide us with different perspectives of the 2 dimensional image. Taking into account that the contributors come from a certain ‘genre’ (dark ambient, noise, post-industrial, sonic experimentation) this is quite a success.
There are many categories of contributions. There are the tracks by moloch (synth/dark ambient, white noise), Kasper van Hoek (almost improvised synthesis), flutwacht (almost silent, just like a kitetic sculpture) and bloater (cinematic feeling with lots of feedback) that are characterised by a ‘calm’ approach to volume and tension and an almost dreamy, sureal and wandering feeling. And there is the ‘other’, louder, harshier side of the compilation that is contributed by praying for oblivion (starts noisy and as it runs it is constructed in seperate parts almost in a concrete manner)and fever spoor (noise with scattered delay chirps). There is also a third approach that is more concept oriented that includes the tracks by THF Drenching (field recording with kids toys) and RESONAN (white noise field recordings with a constant humming) that seem to reflect on the meta-content of the image.
The compilation as a whole succeeds in more or less 50 minutes to present a wide range of interpretations. The suplementarity of the representations presupposes a reference as a beginning, in which case what is considered as a common (the image as theme) in my ears it is so arbitrary that it can serve only as an excuse for the evental happening of the compilation. We (the moremars team) also tried to address the same problems, the need for a common reference with our deconstructive music compilation. The reference constructs the context and the objective of the reference is nothing more than the excuse for the ecdoches. ‘Image as theme’ is a fine compilation with very interesting contributions. The only thing that I miss is a few words more on the reasons why this image is used, what is it that makes the image so important. Except if there is more to come in which case I guess I see the point.
(Also I regret not contributing when I was asked to…)
