âIvan the Terrible and His Son Ivanâ by Ilya Repin (16 November 1581) Itâs thought Ivan the Terrible killed his son during a family row after Ivan Jr.âs pregnant wife walked past the Tsar in her undergown (showing oneâs undies to the Tsar was highly offensive). Another account claims a political disagreement between the two lads was to blame⌠Ivan the Terrible swung his staff and accidentally smashed his sonâs head before desperately trying to stem the blood flow, but to no avail. Twenty-seven-year-old Ivan was the only sane heir to the throne, his younger brother Fyodor was considered mentally ill. The image shows Ivan Jr. at deathâs door, forgiving his father for lashing out by solemnly holding a distraught Ivan the Terribleâs shoulder with his right hand.

A dramatic and ghastly depiction of Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan on Friday, 16 November 1581, painted by Ilya Repin in 1885. Ivan the Terrible, a major figure in Russian history, killed his own son in the middle of a heated argument regarding his mistreatment of his daughter-in-law, young Ivan's wife. Apparently, Ivan the father accused her of immodesty in her choice of clothing and beat her badly enough to possibly cause a miscarriage of her unborn child. Hearing of this outrage against his wife, Ivan the younger angrily confronted his father, and in the ensuing altercation Ivan the Terrible, known to be given to rages, struck his son in the head with his pointed staff (lying in the foreground), causing his death.
Too late to call back his actions, we see Ivan in a moment of excruciating grief, horror, and gripping remorse. His face says it all...
