This white-vented violetear is demonstrating how a hummingbird can fly in different directions: backward, forward, and hovering (not shown: upside down!). Unlike other birds, the hummingbird holds its wing stiffly as it flies and rotates its shoulder to flap, rather than bending it at the 'wrist' in the upstroke. This gives the hummingbird great speed and dexterity in flight.
