The Union II Corps was one of the best fighting units during the American Civil War. At the Battle of Gettysburg, it was II Corps that met the brunt of (the misnamed) Pickett's charge.
When he was reassigned to work with the II Corps in the central highlands south of Pleiku, Reyes-Colon found the environment even more accepting of gay soldiers. He and other gay friends double-dated and even turned a small hooch into a makeshift gay bar where they danced with their boyfriends to the latest Temptations albums. The straight soldiers had their own hooch for boozing it up and dancing. Nobody cared.

USAF Sergeant Roberto Reyes-Colon grew up in a Puerto Rican neighborhood in New York City. He joined the Air Force at age 17 as a means of getting a leg up. He had six other siblings whom his mother raised alone. His family was accepting of his sexuality and encouraged him to return home after his discharge from the Air Force. The discharge followed months of investigations regarding Reyes-Colon’s sexuality.
