āThereās a rainstorm comingā¦.want to go watch it?ā Joey asked me after we stood up from our seats. I thought maybe he was leaving, but I wasnāt going to kick him out. He needs support right now. I honestly do want him to get better.
āSure.ā I replied. Watching a rainstorm actually didnāt sound like a bad idea.
āYou know, watching thunderstorms is one of the few good memories I have of my Dad.ā He started telling me, as we headed to the back door.
āItās weird, I donāt think youāve even told me his name. I know you have your Momās last nameā¦ā I said. I had never asked because from the few things Joey had said about the guy, he wasnāt around much.
āBrandon Puggles was his name.ā Joey said as we stepped out the door.
āDID YOU JUST SAY BRANDON PUGGLES?!!!ā I asked, yelling my question after I stopped in my tracks. I am still stunned stupid. āFROM WILLOW CREEK?!!ā
I remember that Joey and his Mom, Luna, are from Willow Creek. I still havenāt figured out where Dakota fit into all that, just that heās younger than Joey and that they have different fathers.
Joey, clearly confused, answered me āYeahā¦ā¦that was his name. He was from Willow Creekā¦.why??? Is there something I donāt know?ā
āI think you better sit down.ā I told him, my tone low. I wasnāt sure how to tell him. I could barely wrap my head around it myself.
Iām still in shock as I write this. I feel like I belong on Jerry Simmer or something like that. I feel like someone or something thought itād be funny in this world to make me love the son of the man who broke my Momās heart years ago.
I explained it to Joey, the best I could. He was shocked too. We both looked at each other awkwardly.
Until we had to laugh about it. I think it was the only way to deal with the news in the moment.
āSmall world, eh? Pretty sure this story belongs on a primetime drama.ā Joey said, shaking his head and chuckling.
āA very small worldā¦.ā I said laughing softly.
We both grew quiet and decided to do what we had come outside onto the porch for in the first place. Watch the rain. It was peaceful.
āI think my brother likes you.ā Joey said out of nowhere after.
I gasped slightly āNahā¦.ā I said, dismissing the idea.
āIām serious. He talks about you. A lot. He even told me you do this weird thing where you sniff cups and glasses before youāll pour anything into themā¦ā
āExcuse me, I have a good reason for thatā¦ā I started. I really do have a good reason for it.
āYes, he told me. You were given a glass that wasnāt rinsed right one time and your milk tasted like soap. Thatās a fair reason, for the record. But still kind of weirdā¦.ā He said before shaking his head āMy point is. He pays an awful lot of attention to what you say and doā¦ā¦just something to consider, Vera.ā Joey said before rising from the bench. He walked closer to the railing on my porch.
I stood up, following after him. My mind was racing with what he said about Dakota. I think heās wrong, but what if he isnāt? Not that it means you should like someone if they like you. Thatās not how it works. I have found myself growing to like Dakotaās company. I donāt find him annoying like I used to.
āThank you for talking to me, Vera. For not just kicking me out and washing your hands of me. You could have. But you arenāt that type of person.ā He said before turning around to look at me. āI know this donāt matter now, but back in high school. I did like you.ā
Well, he sure waited a long time to tell me that one. At least now I know it wasnāt all in my head back then.
āI had always wondered..what it would be like with youā¦I guess when I was drunk, it allowed me to finally find out. I just went about it all wrong.ā He told me. He wasnāt joking this time. He was serious. āAgain, Iām sorry I hurt you.ā Joey said, stepping closer to me. āPlease, donāt hit me.ā
I was confused.
Until I wasnāt. He pulled me close to him slowly, kissing me gently. I shut off my mind somehow and wrapped my arms around the back of his neck. I kissed him back. This time he was sober. I didnāt taste liquor on his tongue, I tasted polar ice gum. Teenage Vera wanted this to be a kiss to signal a beginning, but adult Vera feels it was a kiss to signal a goodbye.
