It’s funny because this question always reminds me of language classes when trying to learn how to use the subjunctive/if-clauses/imperfect subjunctive. Usually the responses were fairly run-of-the-mill because everyone was too freaked out with trying to understand the subjunctive.

In reality, my response is boring… I’d buy a house, a detached house, and preferably it…

Ihr lernt ja, völlig zu Recht, dass man bei if-Sätzen kein “would” im if-Satz benutzt, sondern present tense oder past tense.

Also, z.B. “If you cheat, you will get caught.”

Oder: “If you were nicer, we wouldn’t fight so much.”

Wenn wir mal von umgangssprachlichen Ausrutschern (auch bei Muttersprachlern) absehen, gibt es dennoch zusätzlich Fälle, bei denen ihr “would” im If-Satz braucht, und zwar ...

1. bei Wünschen für die Zukunft in einem “if only” Satz.

Konkret sieht das so aus:

“If only you would stop smoking!”
