Many people ask me what my end goal is, in establishing my PhD. I believe that George Smith said it well in his essay, Art of the Critique, "We are proposing the establishment of schools for the art of critique. These schools will produce artist-philosophers, so that they not remain the few but become the many, the common. Among these artist-philosophers will be, I do not doubt, those who collaborate in re-formulating the question of modern technology." And someday, I to hope to be apart of such an establishment.

In this exhibition, artists come from varied visual arts disciplines including fine art, performance, curating, art criticism, art history, education and other creative arenas. These creative professionals connect their work to the greater question of what it means to be human, to create a dialog between disciplines and engage in critical thinking in consort with their creative practice. Art provides provisional liberation from the pressures of willing. Without exercising too much imagination, the gallery extends to the entirety of existence. The world is not something to observe through a plate-glass window, but rather something immersive.

This exhibition showcases our work as it speaks to the many questions we encounter in our philosophic inquiry, questions we confront in our daily lives and our struggles to understand the mysteries of our existence.”

"Aristotle replies, in effect, “The artist knows less than the philosopher, that I grant you. But it’s also true that the artist knows more than the historian, because [his] mimetic representations are universal, whereas the historian’s facts are particu- lar.” Always the pragmatist, Aristotle takes Plato’s binary of the ideal/real and sets up knowledge as a working hierarchy: philosophy = high; art = middle; history = low. Hence begins one of the main dialectical histories of Western epistemology—with the science of philosophy always already in first position and art and history endlessly fighting it out for second place. But it is Plato’s original point about mimesis as the artist’s representation of lies that sets up the key aesthetic dialectic between truth and art—not to mention the ever-enduring relationship between aesthetics and misogyny. (Aristotle in the Poetics equates women and slaves, as if to assure Plato that whatever their differences on art, they’re a match when it comes to patriarchy.)"

George Smith has long been a leader and innovator in American education. In 2007, Dr. Smith founded the
Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA). IDSVA is the first and only school in the world to
offer a PhD in philosophy for visual artists, curators, and creative scholars. Supported by a worldwide faculty
of renowned scholars and artists, IDSVA offers low-residency, multi-media digital instruction; holds residency
intensives; and conducts field work in Rome, Spannocchia Castle (Tuscany), Siena, Florence, Berlin, Venice,
Paris, Istanbul, New York City, and at Brown University.
