Every single pregnant woman in rural Haiti who attends a Mobile Prenatal Clinic receives a chart where her health information is recorded: vitals, the results of on-site lab tests, screenings, medications, fundal height, tummy exam, and a birth plan are all recorded. Each visit is tracked and this information ensures the Mobile Prenatal Clinic team, like Philomene and Magdala pictured here, can follow the progress of each woman and make informed medical decisions to ensure the health and safety of mom and baby. In Haiti, where the maternal and infant mortality ratio is the highest in the Western Hemisphere, the care the traveling midwives bring to up to 800 rural mothers a month can very often mean the difference of a woman and her baby surviving pregnancy, or not. And so the mothers come, typically walking 1-3 hours to reach us, and proudly hold their charts throughout the clinic, listen closely to the education they receive, and wait patiently to get the care they need. The midwives work incredibly hard day in and day out, at 23 clinics each month, showing up with their skills, their supplies, but also their hearts. This Friday, May 5th, is International Day of the Midwife and we'll be celebrating these midwives- and ALL midwives- who work tirelessly to lift women up and provide them the respectful care they deserve.
