“I hate idiot plots!” I say as I write a plot with an inciting incident that relies on characters assuming things are fine and disregarding small details that would have otherwise been neon signs had they taken a minute longer to think or ask the right question.
I myself have been guilty of labeling stories as "idiot plots" to insult them, and indeed, stories that treat their characters' intelligence inconsistently are usually bad. But I must implore you to look for purposeful idiot plots! When it's done right, when it's done thoughtfully, there is nothing more hilarious and tragic than watching a whole mass of idiots thoroughly ruin the lives of themselves and everybody else.
