Idaho City is an old gold rush town about 45 minutes north of Boise. It sprang to life around 1862 with the discovery of gold nearby and is said to have produced more gold than the other major rushes in US history — more than California’s rush of ‘49 — so much that it propped up the treasuries of the Union and helped fund its victory in the Civil War. A fascinating look at a place that was once the most lively and populated city in the Idaho frontier. It also boasted a sizeable Chinese population, around 43% at its peak — there’s a plaque honoring Pon Yam, owner of a Chinese mercantile, that sold Chinese goods to the community and there’s apparently a Chinese gravesite somewhere for the miners who were too poor to be sent back to China to be buried (most Chinese tried to save money to have their bodies returned home after death).
