what fascinates me a lot of times about volo is how dieconnected he feels from his own world, as in, nobody seems to have a huge opinion on him nor id anyone close to him.
cogita, even tho they're most definitely family, talks to him at times as if he's a stranger, chides him for shirking work and he at first insisted on calling her "mistress cogita" which is rather formal even for family/distant relatives.
nobody knows him well enough to have an opinion on him, nobody of the gingko guild talks about him or mentions him, cogita (after the spear pillar disaster) just tells you "think no more of that scoundrel" and he is never spoken about anymore after you catch giratina in turnback cave, and still he leaves a massive void despite not ever having been "close" to the player β he was there when it was convenient and helped you when he deemed necessary or if he wanted to get a glimpse of something that caught his interest (as irida even says, he does act and sound rsther opportunistic which can both be attributed to him just wanting to take advantage of people while he can or him being a merchant and seizing a bad moment to plug himself in)
at the end of the day it just makes his belief and the feeling he is being owed power and recognition (by arceus) just tragic, because not even his god acknowledges him (be it fanatism or bc arceus just genuinely thinking ma that guy is insane id rather not). he talks so lively about myths, legends, the ruins you see that in comparison, when cogita talks about them, she almost seems uninterested and even "surprised" that the things her ancestors spoke of worked or were real.
