Brendan wasn’t expecting Rei to suddenly plop herself into his lap, so he jumped with a curse at the surprise and nearly spilled his coffee on the both of them. He was always surprising Rei in a similar fashion, though, by barging in and laying across her lap like some spoiled stray cat, so he figured this was justified payback. “Warn me next time..” he grumbled as he leaned over her to put the steaming mug safely aside. “Now what is tha’ bout our boys causin’ yeh trouble?”

“I never got to the water tower.”

He stepped closer but not too close and offered her a soft reassuring smile. “People don't usually hide in places like this one to cry alone. They drink, punch walls, go for a shopping... But I can relate, you know.” He took the handkerchief from the pocket of his jacket and handed to her. “Trees don't ask stupid questions and don't pretend that nothing is happening with you, right?”

“This is ridiculous.”
