ICE DAGGERS IN THE ANDES Penitentes (sometimes also called nieves penitentes) are sharply shaped ice structures that form most commonly in the Dry Andes, above 4,000 meters in elevation. They are a product of sublimation, where the sun’s rays vaporize the snow without melting it first. Any depressions in an initially smooth snow surface will sublimate faster than other areas, further concentrating sunlight on the depressions, leaving the dagger-like formations with which hikers must use extreme caution during their travels through penitente fields. Penitentes are commonly found to be 2 meters tall, although records of 5m tall penitentes exist. Aside from their striking beauty, penitentes are part of an ongoing conversation about the effects of climate change on glaciers. Due to the sensitive heat balance for glaciers, the role of sublimation is expected to be particularly important in the case of increasing heat, particularly with regards to snowmelt and water resources for places like the Andes. So, if you happen to be a physicist with a flair for heat and energy balance, “dagger ice specialist” might be the title for you. -BN Photo Credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ruesch/3236625213/ http://www.amusingplanet.com/2012/05/penitentes-peculiar-spikey-snow.html http://physics.aps.org/story/v17/st7
