sometimes I think about how alone merlin must have felt. He has this massive destiny on his shoulders and he doesn't really have anyone to talk to about it. Sure, there's gaius, but how much do you really think he talked to gaius? Kilgharrah, but we all know merlin wouldn't have just gone to him to talk. He was so alone but he bore the weight of it anyway, without having anyone to ever talk to about what he went through. Lancelot died and left him, and even he wasn't around for a long period of time.
do you ever wonder what merlin thinks about all the legends and stuff that are around nowadays? how he feels about all the media representations of him, the literature, etc. i bet he has influenced some of the legends and i bet he laughs sometimes at the pointy hat people have decided belongs on his head. but mostly he's probably proud of the lasting, good impression arthur left on the world and the fact that people recognise his king as a great king. and he waits, eagerly, for the time that arthur will be able to see that.

ok but. arthur seeing merlin in a tux for the first time after he's back and swallowing thickly and giving up on tying his own tie, and so merlin comes over and arthur has no idea what to say so he just says "i miss your hat" and merlin laughs because he remembers the feathers and hating it but it had made arthur smile, so of course it had been worth it
and then he finishes tying arthur's tie and pulls him forward by it to bring him in for a kiss and arthur doesn't think ties are all that bad after all
