“Oh, for the love of fuck,” he mutters as they scurry away.  It is, perhaps, not a huge problem if they are in possession of a sharp object, since they cannot hurt themself with it.  The problem comes from the fact that they already have two sharp objects attached to them and don’t really need a third.

“I found her on the ground, actually,” Five says, “where the department store used to be.”  It is a bit of a bittersweet memory, carrying with it both sadness and fondness.  On one hand, it was the moment he met the love of his life, the one that got him through everything.  On the other hand, it hurts to think about her half-buried in rubble, looking as broken as he was at the time.

More alarming than the fact that he finds his back suddenly against the kitchen wall is the fact that he cannot get off the wall.  He can create a rift directly in front of him, but he cannot jump through it due to the invisble force she exerts on him.  So, he lets that one close and opens a new one behind him, allowing her to push him into the adjacent room.  Now, he can move forward again, so he steps into another portal and reappears in the kitchen behind her.

She’s startled, hardly a real threat, or at least that is his assessment of her body language.

“Dolores.”  The name falls from his lips slowly, like molasses.  It is one that he has not spoken aloud for a few weeks, not that she hasn’t been on his mind.

It is disconcerting that this other... thing knows about her, though.  He never introduced Dolores to anyone outside of his immediate family.  He doesn’t know what kind of answer it’s expecting, so he mumbles through the truth.  “I told the manager to get her something with sequins.”

“Trust me, I’m not missing anything,” he says.  “If I wanted your arm severed, it’d be severed, but I’m feeling generous today, given the circumstances.”  As much of a pest as she can be, it is (unfortunately) not worth mortally wounding her over.

There is no possible way that that is an echo.  It is too clear, like someone speaking back to him in his own voice.  Not to mention the added ‘anyone.’  If it is another survivor, they are a damn good impressionist and fancy themselves a comedian.

He has been trying to preserve the battery in his flashlight, but this seems like an appropriate time to use it.  He spins around, waving the beam up and down the aisle, frantically searching.  “Hello?  That’s not funny,” he tells them, voice equal parts irritation and trepidation.
