“Dolores.”  The name falls from his lips slowly, like molasses.  It is one that he has not spoken aloud for a few weeks, not that she hasn’t been on his mind.

It is disconcerting that this other... thing knows about her, though.  He never introduced Dolores to anyone outside of his immediate family.  He doesn’t know what kind of answer it’s expecting, so he mumbles through the truth.  “I told the manager to get her something with sequins.”

Alice doesn’t recognize the woman, but the woman recognizes Alice, which is… scary.  Of course, she doesn’t remember the very early years of her life, the time from when she was born to when she was about four or so.  So, if her hair was ever longer and if she ever met this woman, she does not remember.

“My hair has been short for a little while,” she says.  She runs her fingers through her bangs, which have been the longest part of her hair for a good while to cover up that injury her father gave her, pulling on them slightly.  “I don’t remember much before that, sorry.”

She has his address.  She writes him letters.  He has ignored them for years.  He should have known that it was only a matter of time before she showed up in town, looking for him.

He recognizes her from her photographs, the short blonde curls that are popular among young women her age, her mother’s eyes.  She is taller than he would have guessed from her pictures; she must take the height after him.

It is tempting to slam the door in her face—she should never have come here—but he finds himself unable to turn her away and leads her into the living room.

There, perched in his favorite chair, is a woman, mocking him.  He wasn’t out of that chair for more than ten minutes and the windows aren’t broken, so he doesn’t see how she got in.

“Only slightly,” Mordecai says, picking himself up off the ground.  He is a little too distracted by the feeling of mud caked to his overcoat and fur, imagining all the microscopic organisms crawling around inside.  A paw hovers over his sleeve as he tries to fight the temptation to wipe it off, knowing logically that it won’t help anything.

Green eyes catch a scrap of light in the darkness, making them appear to shine when he looks at her.  She isn’t wrong, of course; he prides himself in his usefulness, in his ability to get things done with unparalleled organization and efficiency.  So few people acknowledge it.  Perhaps, that is why he doesn’t immediately shoot her for sneaking up on him, although his grip on his pistol tightens.

“I think you’ve committed a few more crimes than that,” Akali points out, her glass eyes focused on the kunai twirling on her finger.  “Not that I’m judging.”  They all have committed crimes beyond the comprehension of most mortals.  That is just what they do.
