I am sure some of you are wondering why I keep asking for money for @ibdmoms . Well, because we have a lot of amazing opportunities to help patients and caregivers affected by #inflammatoryboweldisease . • What is #IBD? Its inflammatory bowel disease, which is an umbrella term for conditions that involved chronic conditions in your digestive tract. Crohn’s Disease that affects your whole tract from mouth to anus. And ulcerative colitis, which is centered in your colon. Symptoms may include fatigue, bloody stools, frequent bowel movements, urgency, nausea, extreme pain. As well as extra intestinal manifestations that include joint pain, skin disorders, eye inflammation and more. There is no cure, but there are treatments available to help patients live a better quality of life. • @about_ibd and I started #IBDMoms because as a patients who were mothers, we realized that there was a lack of support or a hub of resources for those who are patients interested in motherhood, those patients in the throws of motherhood and those caregivers who are also mothers. • We started IBDMoms with a hashtag and twitter chats in 2018 to see if there was an audience, and we had an incredible response. So in 2020, we decided to make the program an official 501(c)3 so that we could expand our reach and programs. • Your donation will help to fund programs and support systems that impact real patients. What you can expect from living with #IBD? Expect flexibility. You will have to be flexible. As well as patient and loving toward yourself. Yes mom, I want you to think about yourself. Be patient with how the journey is going. I used to beat myself up for missing events, or showing up late or taking more time to complete a task. The weight of carrying the pressure can be overwhelming. And then you get sick. And the pressure of being sick takes over and its beyond overwhelming. 💜 As a single mother the days im down it feels like th entire world is shutting down. Right now, I may be nauseous, running and back and forth to the bathroom, and have a splitting headache, BUT...homework has to be done, lessons have to be taught, child and dog need to be fed, laundry needs to be done, auditions need to be filmed, dogs must be walked, errands have to be run, zoom meetings must be had, work needs to be done and my meds...someone has to pick up my meds. But all I want to do is lie on the couch and not move for a while. So I have to compromise with myself and my body. I have to forgive myself for the things I will not accomplish today. I have some new followers, so let me reintroduce myself. 🖤 Hi! I'm Brooke Abbott. I'm a mom of one human and one Cane Corso. I'm a patient. I'm an advocate. I'm an activist. I'm one-half of @ibdmoms . I'm a coffee drinker. I'm an opinion leader and a babywearing educator. In my spare time, I read historical fiction. I visit @disneyland when there aren't pandemics. I get my butt beat in chess by a ten-year-old and listen to my niece sing, Let it Go, over and over and over again. I have also coached little league, I volunteer with local non-profits and love love love to travel. 🖤 My mother taught me that the best way to navigate through life is being kind and helping others. I come from a family led by women. Women who are thinkers, innovators, barrier busters, mothers, healers, and lovers. Literally, every family gathering is a female empowerment building workshop for the next generation. Cultivation through stories, food, laughter, coffee, and wine. This background gave me the foundation and fortification to move from a career I had been dreaming of since childhood. To move into work, I was destined to do. 🖤 The change began in 2008 when I was diagnosed with #inflammatoryboweldisease—specifically, #ulcerativecolitis. The diagnosis and my journey through it would lead me to a pivotal moment in 2012. The night before my second bowel surgery, I told my story on my blog, at the urging of my mother. That one post catapulted me into advocacy through social media. This eventually led me to legislative advocacy work and forming #IBDMoms with my good friend ad fellow advocate, @about_ibd. 🖤 I was raised to fight for your neighbor. Social justice and equality is the only way to live. And that it is up to us every day to choose love over hate. So, this is who I am.
