The inspiration behind this new album: the concept of 15 minutes of fame. For those who get it, what you do with those 15 minutes? 10 years has passed since I released my debut album âThe Rest is Historyâ, and a lot has happened in those years, from my run on BETâs 106 & Park Freestlye Fridays, to signing with Ruff Ryders to landing in Asia for music, movies, and TV. I approached this project as if 14 minutes and 59 seconds of the 15 minutes are about to be up. What do I do? What do I say? Whatâs the last thing I want to leave for the listeners? MC Jin -Â XIV:LIX
If you've not been practicing your roman numerals recently âXIV:LIXâ is â14:59â... MC Jin explained the concept of the album as: âIf you get just 15 minutes of fame in life, what would you do with your last secondâ hence 14:59. Iâm gonna need to confess straight away that I only âdiscoveredâ MC Jin for myself in 2013 which I am well aware is  L A T E  in the day. So hereâs my admission... I didn't know MC Jin back in his battle rapping days and totally missed him during his Ruff Ryders phase. Iâm not really a fan of the Fast & Furious movies personally, so I missed seeing him in 2 Fast 2 Furious as well. None of this really matters other than to say - heâs kinda a big deal and made it big on the secular scene before becoming a Christian back in 2009 and the rest truly is history.
So as far as XIV:LIX goes, whatâs the deal? Itâs top drawer  - thatâs what! I love the variety and the versatility of Jinâs tracks. The album started off on the right foot as one of the first things I heard on the first track was the old âLadies & Gentlemenâ sample which has special memories for me⌠it was on the first battle record I ever bought back in the days when I was getting into turntablism. But enough of that nostalgia, this record is about looking forwards, not back. The album is rich and nuanced, it has layers of meaning, content and style. In fact Iâd go as far as to say this is one of the albums that has had me hitting ârepeatâ more than most recently! Â
I really like MC Jinâs accessibility. For someone who has seen more genuine fame in his time than a lot of other folks in the Christian music scene doesn't come across as distant or aloof in anyway,  if anything he seems pretty grounded and humble. You get an indication of what Iâm talking about on the track âFanmailâ. The chorus repeats:  âYou're more than just a fan to me, I think of you as familyâ. This pretty much sums up the attitude that you pick up from MC Jin. I think the whole process of having âmade itâ and then âlost itâ seems to have given Jin a fairly unique view of where he is in life at present and the overwhelming feeling seems to be one of thankfulness. It gives you another insight into the album title 14:59 too. Maybe that impression isnât the 1st thing that normally hits you on an album review⌠but hey, thatâs what hit me.
After listening to the album for about a month Iâd say  the stand out tracks for me would include:

Weâre only allowed 3 stand out tracks⌠but I need to give a special mention to âLike A Rockâ ft Tim Be Told as itâs a top track that pretty much made me tear up the first time I listened to it. Itâs a great song of devotion from a father to a son âlike a rock in the middle of a raging riverâ. You have to love the heart of the song!
