Spectral Lore — 11 Days (I, Voidhanger)
Greek black metal project Spectral Lore originally released 11 Days straight to its Bandcamp as a fundraiser for organizations supporting refugees arriving in the EU’s Mediterranean countries, many of those migrants on the run from poverty and bloodshed in places like Syria, Libya and Sudan. I, Voidhanger, with which Spectral Lore has released a few terrific records, has given 11 Days a more visible digital release, and physical versions are also available. We should all be grateful. Even if you don’t particularly care about the charity angle (you should, but your politics are your own to grapple with), it’s a strong black metal record, well worth listening to closely.

SkyThala — Boreal Despair (I, Voidhanger)
Igor Stravinsky
Boreal Despair by SKYTHALA
According to the unidentified musicians in SkyThala (and see below for some speculation on who’s likely involved), the avant-garde of 21st century black metal is an influence on the band’s complex, knotty sound, but perhaps even more so is the compositional style of Igor Stravinsky. That sort of highfalutin range of reference will likely be enough to send the kvlty types into paroxysms of indignation, which is too bad. The music on Boreal Despair is full of ambitious concepts and highly technical playing, and at numerous points, it sure sounds like there are bassoons, oboes and other wind instruments contributing to the sonic textures. But this is a black metal record, loud, fast and intense. While there are passages to which the ambivalent phrase “progressive metal” could be safely applied, the songs on Boreal Despair never cede their strong relations to icy-cold aesthetic ruthlessness and hot animosity.
