maybe the only slight letdown for me was the barn scene. i think i just went in expecting a bit more from it. with how people who saw it early were hyping it up, and even how richard described it, i really thought there’d be way more going on emotionally and action-wise. like i expected the tension to keep escalating or for the scene to feel more chaotic/intense physically, but it ended up being quieter and more restrained than i imagined. not bad at all, just different from the picture i had in my head. still though, such an amazing episode and it made me tear up :) i wanted to share my opinion on the scene because i wanted to know yours too!
awww anon, this made me so happy! you—and anyone else—are always welcome to come talk to me :D overall, i think the finale was incredible across every aspect! i cried, i laughed, i felt completely frozen in place... there was a lot of buildup as we all tried to piece together what could have led us to the barn, so i get what you're saying with feeling a bit letdown/wanting more! it was over quite quickly, and once we got to the moment we saw in episode 1, i was like, huh, okay, so all of this is for...right. Okay.
but i think in a lot of ways, it being more straightforward, more—for lack of a better word—mundane, made it feel all the more real. their issues were very grounded, very human. there was no need for added drama or theatrics. at the end of the day, niall and ruben are just two damaged men who couldn’t get free of each other, and that restraint feels intentional. the scene refuses spectacle because there isn’t anything necessarily larger-than-life about what’s happening between them—just the accumulated weight of years of being unable to leave something that was never going to end well for either of them
ok i’m gonna rewatch new who now so if there’s an influx of season 1 posts that’s why
merwaine fanfic writers have me thinking this tv show is a better story than it is
