Sometimes watching BBC Sherlock feels like reading a whump fic where the writer did zero research about injuries.
Oh, John has PTSD, a mental health challenge that can impact you in a multitude of ways for your entire life - but he’s okay now, no more cane, no more PTSD, not even worried about Sherlock shooting the wall! What’s a flashback? Also, sure he got shot in the shoulder and should have extensive nerve damage, but nah, he good.
Sherlock was shot in the chest, but he’s fine, really, cardiac arrest a bit, but it won’t hold him back, he’s gonna go shoot a psychopath in the face now, Merry Christmas. Chronic pain? Nerve damage again? Sorry, don’t know them.
Ah, yes, Sherlock was tortured extensively in Serbia, but pay no mind to that, he’s completely and totally okay. John threw him on the floor and choked him, but it’s noooo big deaaalll, he’s all good, we cool, we good.
An overdose??? Extended over a long period of time?? Long-lasting effects? Is that a different language? Nah, he’s fine.
Jumping out of a building after it explodes? Broken bones aren’t a thing! Concussion damage? Burst ear drums? Pshhhhhh, what do you think this is, real life? Get outta here!
I love this show, but for the love of god, gimme the whump. Give me characters whose lives changed because things happened. Make it real, because people experience these things irl and they shouldn’t be glossed over.
