Simon looks from the body on the floor to Prosecutor Winner’s pale face, the stapler gripped in his hand. Simon glances back down at the dead man. Brown uniform, phone on the floor by a limp hand.
Simon sighs and stuffs a box of paperclips into his pocket. He steps into the storage closet and shuts the door. “Talk.”
It’s a Friday afternoon, quieter than most. Some people have already freed themselves from the chains of work, while others are scrambling to leave on time. Simon is counting down the minutes until he can go to Whet Soba and forget how tedious life has been. At least when he’s on a murder case, something interesting is happening. The people of Japanifornia have turned a temporary new leaf; he’s been stuck with low-profile crimes for weeks.
Simon debates dinner as he opens the door of the supply closet. He’s already reaching for the paperclips when the automatic lights flick on and illuminate the gruesome scene.
Well, he thinks as he meets Winner’s eyes. That’s not boring.
