Stinking Toe Fruit
(hymenaea courbaril)
Also known as jatobá, courbaril, guapinol or West Indian locust
Back to the beans, toe beans to be more specific. Native to the Caribbean region, this fruit has a smell that is described by some as vanilla-like, while others say it smells more like Parmesan cheese and even sweaty socks. Pair that with the toe-like shape and I think you can guess why people started calling it stinking toe fruit. Its pulp, which is extremely starchy and more like a flour, is often used in cookies and crackers, or used to make a drink called atole. When eaten raw it turns into a sticky paste inside the mouth and has a flavour similar to banana. The tree also produces resin called "animé" which is a lot like copal, an aromatic resin used to make incense (I think I mentioned another species producing this before, but the tumblr search function isn't letting me find it).
