Diguo

(ficus tikoua)

Its name translating to "fruit from soil'' from Chinese, these figs can be found in southwest China, growing under its vine's leaves, partially covered by soil. The flavor is said to be similar to a green apple or kiwifruit, slightly sweet and somewhat sour. The seeds inside are edible, too, and add a crunchy texture. Often eaten in more rural areas of China, it can also be found in India, Vietnam and Laos. A study into the nutritional value of the species was published in 2024 and ways to improve the breeding of diguo as a modern fruit crop are still being researched.
