i found an interesting looking pennywort at the creek the other day - so i photographed it and uploaded pics to inaturalist, naturally.

now i’ve been through almost every reported hydrocotyle on there and pretty much the only similar ones have been left unidentified. the esteemed Pennywort Man could not even provide a species ID for me ..! it’s special, it’s unique and i really believe that this species has not been named yet !! i will discuss this with the Pennywort Man (once i work up the courage) as he is a botanist with a special interest in hydrocotyles and i’m sure he’s been researching this for quite a while now.

G4 is it’s global rank and in all of the states it’s found it seems to be s1-s3

I’ve only seen this plant twice in Ohio and it’s been either in open fen or along waterlogged banks along remnant creeks. The habitat shot also includes many other aquatic rarities in Ohio such as marsh pennywort, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, and long leaf pond plant, Potamogeton nodosus. Both are aquatic examples of species that are circumboreal.

April leaves: Hydrocotyle vulgaris; marsh pennywort, water naval, money plant, lucky plant, copper coin. I brought this plant back to Italy from a Japanese nursery, but it is native to North Africa and Europe, where I have never seen it growing in the wild.
