Characters: Austria, Prussia
Rating: E
Summary: Itâs 1938 and Austria is living at Germanyâs place, if you can call that a life. Prussia and him have come closer to each other since, but there are still many obstacles to overcome on the path to a relationship ⊠most of all, the difficult parts of their past and their own insecurities.
Happy Birthday, @damnprussia! This is for you, Steph! â€ïž

Prussia was watching Austria over the rim of his newspaper. From his position on the couch, he could see him at the kitchen counter, pouring tea from Germanyâs brass kettle into a mug. Austria was wearing a white shirtâno jabotâand grey, pin-striped trousers that showed the shape of his butt so very nicely.
Prussia could have written a hymn of praise to these trousers. They were elegant and conservative enough for Austria to wear them at least once a week, and whenever he did, Prussia couldnât keep himself from staring.
Sometimes, he fantasised about stepping behind Austria while he made tea, rubbing his crotch againstâŠ
No.
He could feel his face flush and hid behind the newspaper.
No, he couldnât allow himself to do something so crude. Not with Austria.
Prussia had been feeling confused ever since Austria had come to live with them. At first, he had thought: What a wimp, why does he give in just like that? Why doesnât he fight, go undergroundâanything? Anything that would have shown Prussia that Austria hadnât just given up or, worse, actually believed in the shit one of his own children was pulling.
Then he had started to notice how Austria acted around Germanyâor, rather, how he didnât react to some things Germany said. How he excused himself with being tired or unwell every single time he learned of some bigwigâs visit.
One day, he had followed Austria up to his room and had seen him with his ear at the flue. He hadnât known what to do thenâwhether to walk away quietly or to announce his presence and risk scaring Austria. But then, Austria had straightened up, had locked eyes with himâand had leaned down in order to press his ear against the flue again.
That incident had shaken Prussia more than he had let on.
He trusts me. He trusts me not to betray him.
Not so wimpish then, eh? Or maybe just a good judge of character, because Prussia had indeed had no intention to betray Austria.
And then there had been the flute incidentâthe moment when Austria had caught him playing the flute and had said something about feelings.
He was glad he had hidden behind the newspaper. Talkâeven thoughtâabout feelings was something he couldnât handle well, not in relation to Austria.
They had even made out after thatâkissed and fumbled ⊠until Prussia had ruined it.
He had seen Austriaâs hand wrapped around his cockâAustriaâs perfectly manicured hand, softened from regular use of hand lotion, around his crude, red thingâand suddenly, he had remembered how he had jerked off to the thought of subduing Austria for two centuries; to the thought of taking him down until he beggedâas if Austria would ever beg for mercy; he knew that now.
And he had gone soft.
And Austria had blinked in surprise.
And he had been mortified.
He had fled after that, too embarrassed to stay in the room with Austria. To his surprise, Austria hadnât come after him; hadnât even raised the topic since then.
And now here he was, watching Austria out of the corner of his eyeâand what a fine figure of a man he was!âbut not daring to make another move. He didnât even want to think what Austria might think of him now ⊠and even if they tried again, what if he couldnât stay hard for another time?
Austria sat down on an armchair opposite of him, cradling the mug in his arms and watching him over the rim of his glasses. Prussia raised the newspaper higher.
âIâm not stupid, Prussia. I see how you look at me.â
Yes, thatâs what I feared.
Prussia said nothing.
He could hear Austria place the mug on the table and get up. He didnât think he had ever been so nervous.
Austria sat down on the rim of the couch and pushed Prussiaâs newspaper aside.
âI think itâs about time we talk aboutâŠâ
âNo!â Prussia yelped. He rumpled the paper in an attempt to build a defence with it again, but Austria could be surprisingly strong when he wanted to. Holding Prussia by the wrist, he pushed the newspaper out of the way.
Prussia looked down. He knew his face was flushed and he also knew what an ugly contrast it made with his pale skin.
âPrussiaâŠâ Austria eased his grip. âIâm confused. The way you look at me tells me you still want to sleep with me, butâŠâ
âLook,â Prussia interrupted him hastily. âIâm sorry. I donât know how that happened.â
âReally?â He didnât even have to see Austriaâs face to know he had raised an eyebrow. âThen why canât you look into my eyes?â
Prussia said nothing.
Austria lifted his chin, giving him a piercing stare.
Prussiaâs eyes flitted to the side.
âIf this has anything to do with pushing me against a wall about a century agoâŠâ
Prussia froze.
âI thought as much.â Austria sighed. âYou see ⊠did you really think I couldnât have pushed you away if I hadnât wanted to kiss you, too?â
âWell, maybe, butâŠâ Prussia took a deep breath. âThatâs not all there was. I hadââ
âYou donât have to tell me this,â Austria interrupted him. âThat was then, and now is different. I just donât want our past to get in the way of what we might have now.â
âBut I evenââ Prussia didnât know how to continue.
âLet me get this straight,â Austria said, taking his hand. âYou remembered that you had fantasised about forcing yourself upon meâand suddenly, you werenât in the mood for sex anymore?â
Prussia sat stiff and mute as a brick.
âSo that means you were ashamed of yourself?â
More silence.
âYou were horrified that you had ever thought that way?â
Unable to look anywhere that wasnât Austria, Prussia closed his eyes.
The hand that had been under his chin moved to his cheek, and Austria gave him a quick kiss.
âStop beating yourself up about this. It doesnât matter anymore. What matters is how you think now.â
âI donât deserve you,â Prussia whispered.
âAnd what about me?â Austria snorted. âDo I deserve not to be with you?â He gave a bitter laugh. âYou know, I probably do. But I want to be with you, and if you do that, tooâŠâ
Prussia wrapped his arms around him, pulling Austria on top of him for a desperate hug.
âI do,â he choked out.
Austria hugged him back, letting his knees slip to either side of Prussiaâs legs as he drew him in for a deeper kiss.
Prussia raked his hands over Austriaâs shoulders and backâman, that shirt even felt nice, like silk or very soft cottonâŠ
Austria locked his hands behind Prussiaâs neck, stroking up to the soft hair at its nape with one hand before the other moved to Prussiaâs collar, opening it with experienced fingers.
Prussia gasped. His whole body thrummed and he felt the heat pool in its middle. His hands found their way to Austriaâs lower back almost on their own, holding Austria on top of him.
Austria kissed the corner of his mouth, peppered kisses from his chin to the dip beneath his Adamâs apple and further down to where he had opened Prussiaâs collar. He rolled his hips against Prussiaâs, making him realise that they were both achingly hard.
Prussia wanted to grab Austriaâs perfect butt and thrust up; wanted to press a finger between those two perfect orbs of flesh ⊠but that would be too much to ask, wouldnât it? He didnât dare to do more than arch into Austriaâs movements, and he didnât even know how much of that was a conscious action and how much of it was the doing of his body seeking pleasure.
Again, it was Austria who made the next step, kneeling on top of him as he unbuttoned Prussiaâs trousers. When he wrapped his hand around Prussiaâs cock this time, it remained hard.
Prussia thrust up into Austriaâs hand, arching his back in a way he would probably regret later. He was suffering from occasional bouts of lower back pain ever since the Great War.
As soon as it had occurred to Prussia that he might as well come like this, Austria took his hand away and got up, stepping out of his boots and trousers. Prussia was staring at every inch of skin that was revealed, especially at the skin between Austriaâs legs.
Austria watched him and raised an eyebrow.
Spell broken, Prussia stood as well, getting rid of his clothes as swiftly as he could. Then he stepped towards Austria, opening the buttons of his shirt until he could brush it off his shoulders. Austria helped him take off his undershirt as well, and Prussia gently placed his hands on Austriaâs almost hairless chest, brushed down to where he was sure he would have found a pouch some thirty years ago. Now Austriaâs frame was almost skinny, with jutting hip bones.
Prussia went to his knees, massaging the soft flesh to the sides of Austriaâs legs before he leaned forward to take the tip of Austriaâs cock in his mouth.
âLet me sit down,â Austria said in a surprisingly gentle tone, brushing strands of hair out of Prussiaâs face. âI feel too old to do this standing.â
Then he leaned back on the couch, opening his legs so Prussia could sit between them.
Prussia licked from the underside of Austriaâs cock to its base, brushing gently over Austriaâs balls. They were shavedâwho even did that?âbut he had to admit that it felt nice.
Then he leaned forward, taking as much of Austriaâs cock in his mouth as he could.
Austria gasped, tangling a hand in Prussiaâs hair as he shuddered in the attempt not to thrust his hips.
Prussia held them down, bobbing his head as he continued to stroke between Austriaâs legs with his fingers, covertly brushing a finger along Austriaâs perineum.
Or perhaps not so covertly, for Austria gently pulled him back and said:
âDo you want to be inside of me?â
âWhat?â He blushed.
âYou understood me perfectly well.â
Austria reached down to the crumpled heap of his trousers, pulled out a little flask and put it in Prussiaâs hands.
Prussia stared at it.
âI donât have to explain what this is or what I expect you to do with it, do I?â There was a hint of annoyance in Austriaâs voice.
âNo, butâŠâ Prussia trailed off.
âBut what?â Austria didnât let him get away that easily. ââBut I thought you wouldnât want thisâ, or âbut I thought you wouldnât let meâ?â
âBoth, I think,â Prussia said sheepishly.
âWell, both assumptions are wrong,â Austria said. âMaybe you should ask the next time you assume.â
âSorry.â
âNo worries.â Austria sighed and put a cushion under his loins before he turned on his stomach and laid back on the couch. âBefore you make the next false assumption, allow me to point out that I was expecting for us to have sex ever since it didnât work out the last time. I donât think much preparation will be necessary.â
ââŠOh.â If Prussia hadnât been fully hard already, he would have been now. Then a nasty voice inside his head asked him, âŠbut do you think it was you Austria was thinking about when he did that? He tried to push it to the back of his mind.
Prussia opened the bottle and spread the oil over his cock until it was slick. Then he took the globes of Austriaâs arse in his hands and started to knead them. They werenât as soft as he had imagined, but felt just as nice. When he squeezed them, Austria arched up with a groan.
Unable to wait any longer, Prussia held Austriaâs thighs as he positioned himself behind him. After aligning his cock with Austriaâs hole, he started to push gently ⊠and the tip of his cock went inside. Austria hadnât boasted when he had said he had prepared himself.
When he was about halfway in, the base of his cock started to tingle. Prussia needed to take a break, holding Austria down until the sensation of an impending orgasm passed. He really didnât need to approach sex with Austria from both ends of the embarrassment spectrum.
Austria didnât move. If he had realised what was going on, at least he didnât comment on it. At this point, Prussia was grateful for small mercies.
After he had caught himself, Prussia pushed inside. He needed to hold still for a momentânot for Austria to accommodate him but rather for his own sake, for coming to terms with the fact that he was actually having sex with Austria who was also letting him top.
He ran his hands over Austriaâs back, caressing the beautiful shape of his body and admiring the tiny moles on it with his fingertips.
Then he started to moveâgently, carefullyânot that Austria was fragile, but the moment was; something he wanted to hold and write about in his diaryâŠ
âCan you turn around?â he asked nervously. âI want to see your face.â
âWhat a soppy thing to say,â Austria teased, but when he turned on his back, Prussia saw he was smiling. âGood thing you said it, or I would have needed to do that myself.â
Prussia couldnât help it. He kissed him.
Austria held him close and kissed back, caressing Prussiaâs neck with his fingertips.
Their bodies joined again almost naturally, as if they werenât doing this for the first time together. It was what Prussia would have described as âmaking loveâ in his diaryâtheir bodies gently rocking together, almost an afterthought to their kisses and caresses.
Then Austria angled their bodies in a different way. When Prussia rocked into him this time, a tremor went through Austriaâs whole body, and Prussia knew what he had done. It was a bit embarrassing that he hadnât found Austriaâs sweet spot on his own, but seeing Austria come undone under him more than made up for that. It didnât leave him unaffected. Watching Austria in extasy scored pretty high on the sexiest things he had ever seen, and he felt his orgasm build up again, this time with the inevitability of a natural force.
Austria seemed to feel it too. He reached between them and touched himself, making sure he reached his climax at the very moment when Prussia couldnât hold it together anymore. Prussiaâs orgasm overtook him, making his body jerk until all energy left him and he slumped down.
âRight,â said Austria after a moment, sounding far less affected than Prussia felt. âIt seems there is something we need to work on.â He pushed Prussiaâs body to the side, which slid from Austria to the couch like a rag doll. âTry not to fall down on me with your full weight. Itâs pretty uncomfortable.â
âSorry,â murmured Prussia with closed eyes. âI didnât mean to; it justâhappened.â
âItâs alright.â Austriaâs tone softened. âJust try not to do it the next time.â
Prussia felt him get up, but he couldnât be bothered to open his eyes in order to see where he was going. When Austria returned, it was with a wet cloth and a towel. He cleaned them before dumping both towel and cloth next to his trousers. Then he came back on the couch, gently pulling Prussia into his arms.
Prussia hugged him back, burying his face in the crook of Austriaâs neck.
âSo there will be a next time?â he asked uncertainly.
âIf you want to.â He could feel Austriaâs smile in the way the skin on his cheek tensed.
âItâs just ⊠I donât feel very ⊠adequate as a lover,â he confessed. âItâs not only how I used to think about you. Itâs also ⊠you know exactly what you want and how you want it, and IâŠâ He trailed off. âI just donât think I can satisfy you very well.â
âSo you think itâs better for me not to get satisfied at all?â Austriaâs tone was gentle. He cupped Prussiaâs head in his hands and leaned his front against Prussiaâs. It was a position that made it impossible for them not to look at each otherâexcept if Prussia closed his eyes, and he had done that one too many times already.
âObviously not, but ⊠Well, I just donât know what you want with me.â He heard it himself how snotty he sounded.
âHey.â Austria caressed his hair. âSex isnât just about the physical actâwell, at least for me, it isnât. Itâs about being with someone you care for and about making them feel good.â He kissed Prussia on the lips. âYou make me feel good, and I want you to feel good as well.â
Prussia was still sceptical, but he decided not to harp on about it.
âSpeaking of making you feel goodâŠâ Now it was Austria who sounded a little embarrassed. âYou know, Iâm actually not set in the position I takeâŠâ
âOh.â Prussia blushed as he realised what Austria was implying. âI ⊠donât knowâŠâ
âI know there are a lot of assumptions about men who prefer to take the so-called âfemale positionââŠâÂ
âThat you donât seem to care about,â Prussia pointed out.
âThat I manage to ignore for most of the time,â Austria corrected him. âIn any case, I realise that it may be difficult for you to take this into consideration, especially with me.â
âBeen there, done that?â It was a shot in the dark, but Prussia could tell from the contrite smile on Austriaâs face that he had hit the mark.
âI believe,â Austria said thoughtfully, âthat if we want to make this relationship work, the both of us will need to bite the proverbial bullet in some respects.â
âSo you just decided you would do that first?â Prussia was confused. âAs ⊠I donât know, a sign of goodwill?â
âDid the sex we just had feel like a sign of goodwill to you?â Austriaâs tone was sharp again.
âNo,â Prussia mumbled. âIt was bloody amazing. At least for me.â
âNot just for you.â Austria hesitated. âIt was the way I hoped it would be. Gentle ⊠and loving.â He blushed. Prussia realised he wasnât the only one for whom it was difficult to talk about feelings, only Austria seemed to have more practice.
Alright, he thought. Bite the bullet. How hard could it be?
âI ⊠canât promise anythingâŠâ His courage faltered. âButImightwanttotry.â
âHmm?â There was a sly, private smile on Austriaâs face. Prussia just knew he was teasing him now.
Denmark/Norway - persuasion. | Written for @hetaliawritersdiscord drabble game | With blatant and shameless reference to â Waltz Between M. Dâ and M. Nâ  Upon the Eve of War â by @foliefolio
Siste dans
How Denmark managed to convince him to go out for drinks and dancing, Norway still isn't sure. It's not what he intended to do on this visit, and they both know it isn't to his taste.
At the end of the night, they spill out into the cool air together, feeling heady and warm but otherwise no worse for wear. Norway has made it through the evening alive.
It's late. The square they emerge into is quiet, deserted. They stop beneath a lamppost casting golden light.
"Wasn't all that bad, yeah?"
Norway glances up at Denmark.
Something about the way the light catches Denmark's face makes Norway remember one night. Years ago, when neither of them could have imagined that they would be as they are now.
The glow of a ballroom. Red clothing trimmed with gold braid. One last dance before everything fell to pieces around them.
Well.
"Ought to end this night properly." Norway offers his hand.
Denmark raises an eyebrow. Grins as he realizes. "None of that newfangled stuff?"
"Had enough of that for one night. Think you can manage a waltz?"
In the silence of the square, Denmark sweeps him into his arms, and Norway follows.

Though Rome is well-versed in the world of nightmares, no nation has shared his bed for one. At least, none that he can trust. China comforts Rome after a spell and assures him that tragedy is no shameful, foreign concept. In fact, it could look the exact same on the opposite end of the world.

With Aranth, Romulus had never been allowed to grow up, never been treated as a true equal. Though he could never deny the foundation that his brother had laid for himâeven the post moerium, beyond the wall, had evolved from Etruscan traditionâRomulus could resent aspects of it.
With Helen, his momentary fit of madnessâweaknessâhad been nothing but a mistake. After letting the bulk of it pass in a wide-eyed silence, she had finally crumpled and given Romulus a look of pity, but the kind that one reserves for a caged animal.
With Min, he felt safe. Perhaps more sacred boundaries had been crossed than just the Cityâs.
I couldnât take part in the drabble game put on by @hetaliawritersdiscord when it was live yesterday night. But that sure didnât stop from writing something after the work day was over! This idea worked a lot better in my head though. Prompt was Rebirth and set during Imperial times.
He saw the visions from the fire. A figure of an unfriendly face always glared at him but tonight the fire was unruly. Lithuania could see the uncomfortable look in Russia's face as he sat next to him with a book of Russian poetry. Thursdays were the evenings where Russia requested Lithuania to read to him in his study. With his head down at the book but his eyes up away from the paper, Lithuania observed Russia's mannerisms as the man took a handkerchief and dabbed it across his forehead.
It's happening again...
âIs something wrong?â Lithuania asked in a plain tone.
âNothing at all,â Russia replied as he tucked the handkerchief back into his breast-pocket. There's a heavy sigh. âI'm just not feeling my best right now.â
âThat's unusual for a man like you. Are you sure you don't want to retire early tonight?â
âJust continue on, please.â
Russia's voice was strained on the final word and Lithuania did as he was told, as he learned quickly that angering this large burly man was a death wish.
Although at times, in Lithuania's mind, death was truly better the option.
The following night, Russia did not sleep. Lithuania shared a room with Finland and the two men chose to peek through the door of Russia's lavish sleeping chambers as he cursed the opened flames of his fire place. The candles had already suffered their demise as multiple white bits of wax decorated the marble floors.
âI don't understand. What's wrong with him?â Finland asked worriedly.
But Lithuania knows the truth. It's not the first time this has happened and he is sure Russia is not alone. It's all Poland's doing from beyond the grave.
He is getting ready to rise.
In the following weeks, Russia seemed to have returned to his usual self. He was asked to accompany some of his King's high-ranking military officers on a trip further westâand into territory once belonging to Poland and Lithuania.
Russia doesn't put much thought into it and agrees to go. He left Lithuania in charge of running the home where all of the occupying nations lived. Some offered to help like Finland and Ukraine, others like Belarus and Moldova, not so much. As Russia walked the streets dressed in his military uniform, medals and all, everything appeared to be well despite the angry protests among the Polish citizens.
But it wasnât long until the crowds were getting rowdier. And Russia ignored them. But his attention was grabbed as an officer yelled âMove!â as large pieces of wood lit in flames were being thrown into their path.
And there he saw it in the distanceâthe one who stood proudly in tattered clothing to lead the largest crowd. Russia could never forget those green eyes. He was a fool to think he could be truly gone.
âYou are not welcomed here!â
Inside the palace, Lithuania smiled as he sat by the open window in his room. He had begun a new entry in his journal:
In the early hours of the morning, it finally happened. He's returned to reclaim what is his.

Prince Ivan stood in his room as he thought about what else he needed to pack. He felt pretty sure he had everything, but maybeâŠ
Princess Natalya opened the door and walked in. âAll ready?â
âI think so,â he said. âIs my horse ready?â
âLovino is getting it ready now. Heâs joining you.â
Ivan lowered the shirt heâd been considering and looked at Natalya. âLovino is going? I told you I could do this alone.â
âI know that, and I donât doubt you, itâs justâŠ,â she sighed and looked away. âThe forest can be dangerous, and youâre the heir. If something were to happen to you, something would happen to the kingdom. And Iâd miss you.â
Ivan put the shirt down. He clipped his sword and scabbard around his waist. âIâve traveled that way plenty of times alone. Iâll be fine.â
Natalya eyed the decorated sword. She looked worried. âPlease donât tell me you wonât need to use that.â
âWell-â
She started giggling. âIâm kidding. I know you know how to use that, I know you can take care of yourself. Lovino is being sent just for field experience, heâs hopeless. Just be safe, okay?â
Ivan looked at her, somewhat wary at the sudden change in demeanor, but nodded anyway. Itâd be fine.
-
Lovino was very new at this, Ivan soon learned. He could barely ride! After many hours, they made camp for the night. They hadnât gotten very far. Ivan sent Lovino off to find food while he tended to the horses.
Miraculously, Lovino came back with a wild rabbit. Ivan didnât question it, and prepared it when Lovino expressed his inability.
As they sat around the fire, Lovino spoke. âI know you think you donât need me, but tensions are high.â
âI would be fine,â Ivan ground out.
âBut you wouldnât. Last time was a disaster. We need this alliance, Ivan, and we need to do it without more problems.â
Ivan turned away. âThat wasnât my fault.â He was aware he was probably pouting, but didnât much care.
Lovino sighed and turned towards the horses, probably to try to groom them. Ivan didnât see what happened, but suddenly the area was full of blue and purple light, Â the fire was out, and his legs hurt. Lovino gave him a hasty âdonât moveâ before galloping off after the spooked horse.
Ivan couldnât see how he could do anything but not move. Ivan couldnât see much of anything, right now, as black spots clouded his vision, and soon slumped over in a deep, deep sleep.
-
Ivan was comfortable. Quite comfortable, and he didnât want to open his eyes. Opening them would mean he was awake, and being awake meant he had to start his day. He nuzzled deeper into the covers, which smelled faintly of earth and life and growing things. He started drifting off again.
Wait.
Nothing in the palace smelled like that.
His eyes shot open.
He was in a room heâd never seen before. It looked like a simple cottage, with a hearth, a chair, a single bed. Across the room was a worktable with various tools scattered on top. There was clutter and signs of life everywhere, but whoever owned this house had just recently left, it seemed. There was still a fire going, and it looked like something was cooking.
Well. Ivan shouldnât overstay his welcome. He threw back the covers and made to stand up.
âHey!â A blonde boy, with wavy hair and glasses over big eyes stood right there and Ivan didnât see him come in? He didnât see him anywhere a second ago? âYou shouldnât be moving so soon, you were really hurtâŠâ
When Ivan made no move to lay back down, the boy pushed him back with surprising force. Ivan tried to speak, but nothing came out. The boy started to fade out.
âI made soup!â The bowl looked as if it were floating on its own, as the young man holding it flickered in and out of existence. âIâm not sure if you should have it, though, I donât know if youâre like me or what itâll do to you.â
Ivan had no idea what he was talking about, but he was hungry and didnât know what was going on. He held out his hands for the bowl. It floated in and Ivan took a sip.
âIs it good?â Asked the boy.
âYes,â said Ivan. âWhatâs your name?â
âOh, I guess youâre human. They give each other their names for every little reason. Maybe you should ask something else.â He gave a nervous chuckle.
Ivan didnât know what that meant, or what else to ask, so he tried again. âWhat...can I call you?â
âBetter,â the young man smiled, âYou can call me Ursalia.â
Ivan wanted to share his - it was only polite! - but Ursalia stopped him. âMaybe you should get to know me first,â he said, âyouâre not like me and I donât like trapping people.â
Ivan shrugged and finished the soup. Ursalia seemed nervous. âWhy are you called Ursalia?â
âIâm not, usually,â he said, âbut my home has many bears.â
âIâve been through these woods a bunch of times, and have never seen a bear.â
Ursalia laughed, light and free. âThis isnât my home! Iâm just staying here for a while.â The smile was gone.
âWhy?â
Ursalia looked at him, firelight glinting off his glasses. âYou shouldnât pry. Itâs almost as if no one taught you the rules.â
âRules?â
âOf the fae.â
Ivan frowned. Realization dawned on him as he looked at the empty bowl of soup. Heâd been an *idiot*, far too trusting, too naive just like his sisters always said.
Ursalia looked surprised and a little hurt. âItâs okay! Iâm not going to hurt you. You understand the trouble Iâd be in if you knew my name, just like youâd be in trouble if I knew yours!â He also looked at the empty bowl. âIt wasnât poison, and it should be okay. It was made with what I found in the woods, not magic.â
Ivan didnât feel convinced, but, okay. âTell me what happened,â he demanded, âWhy am I here? What happened to my horses? Lov - my companion?â
The young man sat at the workbench, back to Ivan. Heâd gone quiet, and Ivan had to strain to hear. He was fading again, too.
âIt was my brother. I left home because of him, but he followed me, and, Iâm sorry, we met at your camp.â
âOh?â
âWe fought and he left again, probably to tell someone heâd found me, and one horse got hit. It ran off, and your friend went to look for it. You were hit, too. Your legs, theyâre hurt. I did my best but theyâre not completely healed, my magic isnât strong here. I donât know when youâll be able to walk again.â
That was...a lot to take in. Ivan didnât know what to say. âIâm supposed to be meeting with another kingdom. Iâm a prince, you know.â
âIâm sorry,â Ursalia said, âI didnât mean to bring you into this. I couldnât just leave you out there! I donât know what his magic might do to a human.â
Ivan couldnât stand just laying there. He threw the blankets off, revealing his heavily bandaged legs, and got up.
Or, tried to.
He shuffled his legs off the edge of the bed while Ursalia watched. Holding the bed for balance, he stood up and immediately his legs gave out as pain shot up his calves.
âI told you. You should stay here until youâre better,â Ursalia told him.
Ivan slumped back. âBut I canât. Iâm a prince, I canât just sit here. I have duties to attend to and an alliance to form. How do I know how much time has passed?â
Ursalia shrugged. He looked uncomfortable. âSorry, but, thereâs nothing else you can do. Itâs probably the same time pattern as outside. Iâm hiding in your world, not mine.â
Ivan sighed and agreed to stay for awhile. Itâs not like he had a choice.
Frustration grew with each passing moment. Roderich, since he had come from the hospital, didnât leave the bedroom.
It had to be just a dream â no, a nightmare. This was a nightmare. It had to be.
Oh God, tell him that it was just a nightmare and that he woke up in the morning... normal.
He was... Normal.
He tried again to move his finger.
Failed.
Frustrated, he shouted with all his might.
That morning, oh, that fateful morning, he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate effectively.
That broke his heart... How would he play his instruments? How would he give music lessons? How would he take care of his wife... and their daughter and the one to come?
"You will be like this tree, Rod..." she began and Roderich saw her tears forming. "You are strong... The doctor said that although there is no cure, you can get better if you do the treatments and the therapy."
"But I can also get worse ... and be a burden to you."
"No, Rod, you'll never be a burden," she shook her head. "The future is uncertain... it always was. Maybe tomorrow the cure is found or maybe it will take years for that... But you have to fight. You're going to win this fight, Rod. "
"Who guarantees you that?"
"I believe in you."
Roderich looked at her in surprise. No, deep down, he knew that. He knew the blind love she had for him... What a fool... To have doubted her... To have thought that he was the only one suffering from that situation.
