Human Arts - “Big Sur Highway” Club H Vol.2 by Harry The Bastard Song released in 1997. Mix released in 2000.
The duo of Ashley Beedle and Darren House may be known for being members of downbeat group Ballistic Brothers or maybe even more famous as British acid house legends X-Press 2, but they also released a 12″ under the Human Arts moniker.
“Big Sur Highway” is an amazing piece of jazzy deep house. It samples very liberally from Carlos Santana’s “Golden Hours” off his 1980 Latin jazz rock album The Swing of Delight, which he recorded with Miles Davis’ band. Imagine “Golden Hours” got a re-release as a 12″ or a CD maxi single in the late 90s. “Big Sur Highway” would probably be on the B-side as a house remix.
Beedle and House changed the drum track, added some bass, lifted the flute and guitar parts they liked, lifted the drum solo, and looped the dreamy high note synth sequence provided by Herbie Hancock. They fused all those pieces together to create a newfangled deep Latin jazz house rendition of “Golden Hours”. One of the highlights of this brilliant Harry The Bastard mix.

If you are a fan of Chelsea from PAINTBOX and DEATH SIDE’s guitar playing, you need this. It was somewhat under the radar because it was originally a CD only release. Props to Kick Rock for the vinyl reissue. Raging album.
