A recording of âHula Louâ by Isabelle Patricola.
This song was reportedly the song played over and over by Beulah Annan, for hours, after she murdered Harry Kalstedt, and before she called her husband to report it.Â
A version of the song was also recorded by Sophie Tucker, who Roxie Hart mentions in the song âRoxie Hartâ in the musical Chicago.Â
Beulah Annan danced to the recording Hula Lou for 2 hours,as her extramarital lover died on her living room sofa. She called her husband, who was all to willing to take the fall, and say he shot a home invader ravaging his wife. Until he figured out the home invader wasn't a home invader. Still he faithfully stuck by his unfaithful wife until she divorce him after acquittal. He was too slow!
Top: Phyliis Haver, 1927, as âRoxie Hartâ in the silent film, âChicagoâ.
Bottom: The real life inspiration for âRoxie Hartâ, Beulah Annan (Chicago History Museum photo, 1924).
âOn April 3, 1924, in the married couple's bedroom, Annan shot Kalstedt (her lover) in the back. According to her initial story, they had been drinking wine Kalstedt had brought over, and got into an argument. There was a gun on the bed and both reached for it, but Beulah got it first and shot Kalstedt while he was putting on his coat and hat. She then sat drinking cocktails and playing a foxtrot record, "Hula Lou," over and over for about four hours as she sat watching Kalstedt die. She then called her husband to say she had killed a man who had "tried to make love" to her.â ~ wiki
In Chicago in 1924, Hula Lou played over and over by Beulah Annan after she shot her lover (Harry Kalstedt). As he bled to death on her floor she put the needle down again and again after the song finished and shuffled and shimmied as school girls danced outside her apartment window. After a couple of hours she called her husband and told him she shot a man.
The trial would give birth to Maurine Watkinsâ (Chicago Tribune reporter) play titled, âThe Brave Little Womanâ and then retitled âChicagoâ... later made into a film starring Phyllis Haver as âRoxieâ. Itâs now called âPlay Ballâ  to differentiate it from the musical version.
